Isabella Shadow Home Made Side

Having purchased a 3metre Isabella Shadow Awning while passing through Denmark last spring, we were very pleased with the way it performed. It stood up to some fairly harsh weather conditions so we decided to look at ways of adding a side to it.

We had already used our really useful pole as a fine weather prop Top tip topic (3) while we were away and here are some photos of the 2016 Summer Meet with the side fitted. 36 other Eriba van owners will vouch to the fact that one or two of the days there were very windy but the side stood up to it.

Previous discussions on this forum had concluded that perhaps the best way to fit a side onto a flat roofed shade was to fit it independently of the roof as roof and side combinations are prone to fail in high winds and foul weather. Therefore having seen a Dutch Eriba owner just pegging a tarpaulin onto the side roof fabric of his shade we decided to try a hooked pole between the standard awning eyelet on the van's awning rail and the top of the corner pole of the shade.

We purchased another £3.00 Wilkinson's Line Prop and stuck a wine bottle cork in one end before screwing a large picture hook into it. We left the plastic "G Hook" on the other end but, in retrospect, the plastic was being stressed so we will change that too and duplicate the hook on the other end.

We used two awning rings for the purpose of a corner pole connection but the wind was so strong at Corby it started to unravel one of the metal rings. Therefore another stronger method of connection is on the drawing board.

Mrs R purchased some Waterproof Fabric for Beanbags and Outdoor Cushions (Fire Retardant Polyester) from Ebay and proceeded to make up a rectangular side sheet with some pole loops on the top and some ladder awning rubber fixings on the bottom. We decided to use two colours and to design the side so that it could be rolled up if necessary.

The photos do show a larger than normal gap between roof and side, largely because of the failure of the front corner post connection but there will always be some sort of gap there that we can live with and any undue wind pressure on the side sheet will not impose itself on the roof.

Notice from one of the pictures, and as stated in the other post linked to, that your Isabella Shadow only came with 2 poles. I always thought the 3m version came with three poles. Am I wrong in this thinking?

Yes, the 2.5 M and 3.0 M come with only two poles although 3 guy ropes, the centre guy rope fits through the eyelet on the strengthened orange triangle in the centre front.

What is annoying is that the 3.6 M (Yes, 3.6 M not 3.5 M) is about 100mm too long for a Troll .That comes with 3 poles as does the 4.0 M. Why on earth did Isabella decide to offer lengths in 500 mm increments EXCEPT between 3.0 M and 3.5 M?

2.4 and 3.0 come with 2 poles. All the other [longer] versions have three.

Yes I see now that it's 2.4 M not 2.5 M therefore a 600mm increment between smaller sizes.

Okey dokey, thanks. We've currently got the 2.4m version and additionally, the front net extension that we used with our previous Triton. We were considering the 3m version for our Troll but considering the number of times we used the last one think we'll skip it this time around. I was obviously a bit confused with the three pole aspect and mixing it up with the fact that with the additional front net further cross poles are supplied. Guess we'll just have to snuggle up a bit closer by choosing to retain the 2.4m jobbie.

We have 3.6 mtr Shadow & Troll 540. Just need to fit two additional eyelets 100mm inside existing within the corner reinforced section.
This enables the shadow to tension on the straight section.
Put two more eyelets on the net, same distance apart.
£10 for four @ local sailmaker.
ERIBA Troll 540GT ..covered & cool....
