Hello
Does anyone know the rules or legalities concerning what shape your number plate should be on the rear of the caravan.

Hi Maurice. I'm guessing that you are referring to whether your van needs a standard car shaped number plate of a square one?

I'd pay particular attention to where your number plate light/lights are fixed. Generally, Eribas from about the year 2000 onwards have a central recess to accomodate a car shaped number plate and have number plate lights in that area.

However Eribas up to about 2000, have a single number plate light in one or other of the rear light clusters and should therefore have a square number plate fixed to the bracket provided beneath that light.

Regarding nearside or offside, these pre 2000 vans have the brackets on the UK nearside if they've been imported some time after manufacture. Ours is one such van but we've had a square number plate on the UK nearside since the van was manufactured 21 years ago.

Pre 2000 vans made to be imported into the UK normally have the number plate light and square number plate bracket on the UK off side.

Number plates should conform to regulations. I.e Letter size and spacing. eg AB69 ABC. ABC 123. etc. If the correct spacing is not used, it could invalidate your insurance (Vehicle not road legal) and as we know, insurance companies will use any excuse to avoid paying out.

All you need to do is get one made up at any car dealer/garage. They will make it to the correct spec. Just need to tell them if it is square or letterbox shaped (and that it is for the back (yellow). Should cost about £10. Take your V5 with you.
