All Season Tyres

Hi everyone ,

I am just thinking about changing my tyres , which are 2016, looking good and hardly used , but the Eriba has stood around most of this year . Saw a video of a blow out tyre on a trailer and it was very very scary ...the change is just for peace of mind , probably is a year early .

As we going away in December and my vehicle pulling the Eriba has Goodyear 4 seasons fitted , which are great , I was think of fitting similar to the Eriba .

I was just wondering what experience others might have with 4 Season tyres on the Eriba ?

My tyres at present are the originals 185 R14 C 102 L , I think Vanis Barum .

Thank you for any opinions ...

Robin

Robin,
I have been under the impression that whilst avoiding cheap tyres you do not need to buy top end and this is normally the price bracket for All/4 seasons tyres. The caravan is being pulled and is not subject to the same loads as a cars tyres that are under stress from applying power and steering. Whilst All/4 seasons tyres are definitely on my list at replacement time for the car I cannot see it worthwhile going down that route for the van unless you plan to do a lot of winter caravanning. The increased friction with the road in braking would then be a possible advantage.

Great points, thanks .. I will see what the difference is in price . I don’t plan a lot of winter trips , except this year ...but maybe we will get slushy snow as where we live we’ve got unusually cold weather already and to drive North I have to go over a mountain range to get to the main motorway , it can be deep snow on the top of the plateau .

I am not at all technical but logic tells me it must be like another set of rear tires for my VW and my rears don’t wear like my front tyres, so perhaps it isn’t needed .However if it’s 20 Euro a tyre it’s not so much for the option to go into a winter zone legally . In France some areas are likely to make winter tyres a legal requirement soon.

We got one quote today for Hanooks, the dealer claimed everything else was unavailable for the time being until they didn’t know .. it’s strange because the online guys all say 72 hours for most brands . The dealer in Ales , big town near us , Quoted 120 euro a tyre fitted , which I found expensive. We use the for our cars and they are normally good value, so that was strange.

Everything is cheaper in UK , but I can’t get back and forth so easily as I usually do.

Cheers

6 years ago I ordered a set of Nokian winter tyres for my Yeti. It was through www.tyreleader.co.uk who where about as cheap as I could find. The tyres and steel rims in with the same order were shipped out from Germany and arrived at the garage of my choice within about 4 days from memory. Would buying through the internet and not a local tyre outlet be worth consideration.

There might be a case for all seasons tyres to prevent the van breaking away from the line on a bend in slippery conditions. I haven't experienced this myself with a caravan but something similar. Many years back I had a company Ford Escort van, front wheel drive. I was issued a set of snowchains as I needed to get to some remote sites. All was fine with the chains fitted to the front wheels until I went down a hill with hard packed snow. I had to brake gently to reduce speed and the rear wheels lost grip and the van spun round, hit the kerb broadside and almost tipped over. Lesson learnt that one should have snowchains on all the wheels, driven or not. Maybe the same applies to towed vehicles?
