Get your tow bar checked out.

Before we retired we used to change our tow car every few years but we now tow our Eriba with a Touran which we bought new and is now 11 years old.

We decided when we bought it that we would arrange to have the tow bar fitted by a specialist company that we have used for decades (Britannia Tow Bars Swansea).

We've had the tow bar checked out once before but I noticed recently that the plate that holds the electric socket was flaking so we booked an appointment and took it to get it changed yesterday.

Upon further inspection which included taking the back bumper valance off, it was found that the tow bar cross section was badly corroded. This is something that is not obvious when crawling under the car. So, new tow bar on order.

Please get yours check out regularly or your Eriba may be parting the ways with your car.

I'm surprised this did not come up at MOT time Roger. I thought towbar mounts, condition and now electrics are part of the test.

Interesting. We have our MOT done locally by a well organised garage. I'll have a word with them shortly. They did fail the car last year for two rear suspension drop arms which they then changed. It is the area of the car that takes all the s***.

If the towbar is detachable but not attached, they won't include it in the MOT. AFAIK

Even if the balls not attached I'd have expected them to still test the integrity of the Metalwork still in place.

Apparently unless the ball is on no part of the system is tested, it happened to us the last car, seems weird but that's what the MOT garage told us.

It all makes sense now as it is similar situation for a spare wheel. If you have one it must be roadworthy as it could be used, if it is not some folk remove it so it is not tested.
