As the years roll on and our children and grandchildren are not spending as much time with us at Christmas because of other commitments, we are wondering what are the merits of spending the holiday Eribaring?
We know of many folk who do just that and we would be interested to learn of thier experiences. We would particularly like to hear from folk who go abroad to seek the sunshine but stay at smaller camping sites and not the very large Costa sites with 100s of other Brits.
This French lady appears to have the right idea. Salamanca, a lovely city in the Summer but what about at Christmas?

hi Randa
That looks very tempting. I like the idea of a smaller site somewhere warmer for winter. I know of two friends who usually spend January & February in Spain in their smallish motorhomes but they stay on the same large (and quite expensive) site and that doesn't appeal to us at all.
Although we have young grandchildren so a stay over Xmas would be out for us for a fair few years - but Jan & Feb could be a goer.
I wouldn't consider a long winter stay in our Troll in the UK as I am a bit of a softy and my ears seem to get very cold in the van . We stop at the end of November & start again in March
Have a good 22

Hi Colin
Kath and I used to go Portugal a fair bit out of season and often stayed to the east of Faro in a commercial fishing port Olhao. This had good rail links across the Algarve. We were waiting for our Troll to be built but started looking at campsites when we got the train to various places.
Many of the sites seemed to be very big, busy and not very attractive to be honest. The pitches usually seemed very close together.
However we did see one smaller (not small) one at Fuzeta between Faro and Tavira on the coast. We wandered in for look and had a chat with a very friendly warden. It was on the river estuary and well placed. However he told us that it was very popular with north Europeans and not easy to get a pitch and that many people booked for long periods. However there was a very dusty Triton on site. but the couple were not around. The warden thought that they were Dutch.
It was a municipal site called Park de Campismo Fuzeta and you can see it on the web. I don't know enough to recommend it but Fuzeta is a small quaint typically Portuguese village not far from the much larger Tavira.I didn't like the crowding but everyone we saw seem to have vans and motorhomes packed on. It will give you an idea of what places are like.
The guy did stress that you needed to book well in advance.
All the best to you both for 2022
Mike

When we toured the whole of Portugal in 2015 our last stay was on the Rio Formosa near Fuzeta and Tavira but we found that the sand barrier rather restricted the views over the sea. We had moved on from a lovely but very large campsite near Praia de Luz (
) but all in all we found the Algarve to be the worst area of Portugal but there are some stunning small campsites in historic towns and villages further north. Our worry is whether these towns are dead when off season.
On that trip we also stayed near Salamanca at Camping Don Quijote https://www.campingcard.co.uk/spain/cast...quijote-100921/ but it appears to be closed during the winter months.
I assume that European towns and cities that are not coastal resorts are still open during the closed season as are UK towns like Gloucester, Swansea, Lincoln so it's just a matter of finding the right campsite.
This is the campsite in the above photo that the French lady is staying at. https://www.campingcard.co.uk/spain/cast...e-regio-100922/

Having been forced into staying in the UK these last two years we have actually quite enjoyed the experience ( forgetting the whole COVID experience) and are now thinking that spring/early summer in the UK then winter (post Christmas) abroad is the way for us. To be honest I still don’t like having to book in advance and being told where and how to pitch but them’s the breaks. Although the sites are more expensive if you factor in the fuel to and from Dover and the coast of the crossing it probably evens out. Of course you don’t get the same cultural experience.
For us, due to family, it would probably be January through to March but that’s the part of the year Neil hates most, dark and cold.

We did a winter trip to Portugal and Spain pre covid. Christmas Day on the beach!
It’s certainly different.
We’re going again later this month.

I trust you enjoy yourselves. Are you doing the long boat trip. I got around to doing the number crunching and I thought it makes sense. If we do make it in 2023 I'll have to look into joining the Brittany Ferries Club, or isn't it worth the outlay.
