Regarding le flot du bois I found this on the interweb about the Clamency float which is not that far south of us on the Yonne River.

Stayed on the campsite today and we had a visitation from the Snoozers who cycled 12 kms to see us.

Great to have a chat and a few bits to eat and drink.

Keith looked a bit flat when he knew they had to leave

We used the Camping Municipal at Clamecy. There's a footpath from the site along the riverside into the town. Nice place.

Roger out of interest did you have to show your proof of Covid vaccination at any point at departure or landing in France?

Michael, we travelled out on 6th June via Dover. We showed passports and proof of vaccine at the French booth, again at the UK and then passports at the P&O booth.
When we landed in France nothing was checked.
On a footnote, we had no checks on the vehicle or caravan and in the car boot had a freezer full of dead animal and dairy products.
We met a couple who had crossed from Newcastle to Hook of Holland and before boarding had wardrobe, bathroom and kitchen drawer checked, but not the fridge. Makes no sense to me.
It would also appear nobody is bothered about UK instead of GB stickers, they are just as glad to have us back as we are to be there. It is wonderful, if a bit on the hot side.

Hi Mick.
Yes, but although we had paper copies Mrs R also had photographs of them on her phone and they appeared to like that idea. No fuss however, just like showing a passport.

Regarding the UK sticker, I think it was the Snoozers who told us they were mistaken for travellers from the Ukraine, not by the authorities but by fellow campers. Yesterday there was an small camper arrived from the Isle of Man. They still have GBM stickers on their number plates complete with Manx National Flag.

That's an interesting observation. Ukraine are in talks to join the EU and, if they do, what number plate icons will they get? Surely they should have UK...!! It's madness changing us from GB to UK after goodness knows how many years! I have changed my number plates in anticipation of a trip to ~France in early August, however I'm now thinking about changing back to the old GB plates!

Saturday 18th June and 37 degrees. Phew it's hot.

What is the significance of the 18 June?

The Appeal of 18 June (French: L'Appel du 18 juin) was the first speech made by Charles de Gaulle after his arrival in London in 1940 following the Battle of France. Broadcast to Vichy France by the radio services of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), it is often considered to have marked the beginning of the French Resistance in World War II. It is regarded as one of the most important speeches in French history. In spite of its significance in French collective memory, historians have shown that the appeal was heard only by a minority of French people. De Gaulle's 22 June 1940 speech was more widely heard.

Some towns and villages are having a Shindig to celebrate it today.

To cool off, we decided to go for a drive around with all the car windows open. It was a very pleasant couple of hours and we saw much of the countryside just to the south of us where the River Yonne and the Canal du Nivernais go alongside one another for many miles. The Canal is 108 miles long and links the Loire with the Seine.

There are several spots with good views of both and at a place on the map called "Rocher du Saussois" we just had to stop th look at these nutters high above the canal.

It was at this point that we spotted the Troll. A lovely old canal boat owned by a nice young couple. When I pointed out we had a Troll too they immediately said "oh an Eriba". He was looking for a lift into Clamecy but unfortunately I had to show him that it was impossible with no seats in the back and a large cat cage.

We got as far as Clamecy before driving back.

Yes we've been there. I saved a stalk of wheat from the battle field and it now sits at home sharing a place with a stalk of wheat from the field north of Paris where Van Gogh shot himself.

Waterloo's in Belgium, isn't it? So no surprise they celebrate it, as they were allied with the Brits - indeed it was the arrival of the Prussians under Blucher that saved the day, i seem to remember, so a real European enterprise...
