Not on motorways. 130kms!

That's correct Islay but there is a strange anomaly regarding heavier and bigger cars. For example, our car weights in at 2100kg and is capable of towing a trailer of up to 1500 kg making a total train weight of 3600 kgms. Therefore, in France, legally I can only tow up to speeds of 80km per hour irrespective of the fact that our Eriba only weights 1000kgs making a total train weight of well below 3500 kg.

What makes the law crazy is that I could tow the Eriba with a very light and underpowered car at 130 kms per hour. 😊

I assume that Giancarlo (GCL) falls into this strange law as he tows with a Land Rover Disco.

I'm very happy at towing at 80 kms per hour but the traffic is so fast flowing on the A6, including lorries, that I need to keep pace especially when the car is clogged up from all the slow speeds over the past couple of months. A fast spin up the motorway clears up the tubes.

It's funny but I'm convinced that the only people who respect all these rules are the Brits! We don't often go over 100kms as I think Betty's too old ( and I have a really silly fear of the windows popping out lol) and we're constantly being overtaken by other eribas.

Saturday 11th June and look who turned up at just after 10AM. The Snoozers

We were determined to meet up for a few days before the end of this trip but it happened a little earlier than planned.

Chris and Keith are on the next pitch to us and it's even bigger than ours. They've been touring the NE of France for the past two months and our paths will cross again as we're booked on the same ferry home in a few weeks time.

That's right. The heavier the car the less fast you can go. In my opinion it should be the other way around, the heavier car should guarantee more stability. Regarding compliance with the rules, did you know that in Italy the speed of 100 km / h (Tempo 100) is not recognized but only 80 km / h? Well in many "D" run and risk the withdrawal of the license.

As Giancarlo says, in most other European countries, 80kph is max for caravans unless in Germany, you have a TUV.

France is now confusing as they have now slowed down the speed limit on all non-dual carriageways to 80 kph yet they have not altered the signs.

In Italy Giancarlo, I though those who have the loudest horn get to go the fastest

Roger, some places have put the speed limit back to 90 but haven't changed the signs back so best to err on the side of caution. When the country went down to 80, there was an outcry as it cost communes a fortune to change all the speed signs so when some changed back, it was deemed unnecessary to replace them! Lovely logic!

My default is now 80kph, especially since fuel is now as expensive as wine. I paid just over 7 euro for our 3L Rochet Mazet wine boxes a few days ago. The Cinsault Grenache is very pleasant about 5.30pm mixed with fizzy mineral water.

we were only talking about you last night Colin with your garage full of wine boxes each time you return from abroad.

The Snoozers were tickled at the fact that Mrs R is building up a stash of boxes of Whiskers Cat Food to bring back as it is often unavailable in our part of the world.

It turns out however that Chris Snoozer is also building up a stash. Her preference is dish washer tablets because they are currently on offer over here at a vastly cheaper price than in the UK.

So the Snoozers moved on today but we shall stay for another day or two. The campsite is quite nice but that road noise is very annoying and is constant during the day and evening. It's not background rumbling but a sharply increasing "whoosh" as cars, vans and motorbikes speed down the narrow B road right next to the campsite.

The other thing I find a bit sad is that many of the campsites we've used this year appear to be one night stop overs particularly for campervans. Yes, I suppose the campsite needs their custom so as to fill the emplacements but when I consider that the same amount of paperwork needs to be produced whether someone stops for one night or more then I think ACSI should consider allowing the campsite to add a few Euros extra to charge one nighters to cover the additional work.

The weather is still very hot so yesterday we took a drive to the west of Chalon to see some of the very wealthy wine villages.

Today we visited Chalon itself for a couple of hours. Plenty of old streets with interesting buildings to see.

Tuesday 14th June. Another very warm day so a trip out in the car.

First stop the village of Alleriot about 4 miles up the noisy road. S IMG_3368.jpg - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)

It's the place we stopped off at 12 years ago, 6 months BE so stopped at a Chambre d'Hote. It was like something out of the Generation Game where our hosts did not eat with us but watched us as we dined on some surprise local dishes. They wouldn't tell us what we were eating until we had guessed it or had finished it. To give you the flavour, the opening dish was large green toad pate.

S IMG_3369.jpg - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)

The village when we were last there was a dump with no through roads along the river but wow, haven't they opened it out now. It has a lovely river walk and some cafes and restaurants there.

Then we came acr0ss this building on the main street of a village called Dameray. Now what's that all about? The French love their follies .

S IMG_3373.jpg - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)

Beaune.
Recognised by travellers in July and August as being the motorway crossroads to everywhere in France and the creator of some of the biggest traffic jams in France.

The city itself is really lovely except the Tourist Information Office obviously doesn't like tourists as they rigidly close for lunch from 12noon till 2pm. Coupled with that there are NO street maps to indicate where the best sights can be found. The Hotel Dieu built in the 15th Century. We wouldn't have found it but for a friendly shopkeeper. 12Euros entry which is a bit steep but it is quite interesting.

Wednesday 15th June. Yesterday evening at the Chalon campsite 2 members of Eribafolk Facebook arrived for one night with their Puck L 225. They are Norma and Peter from Northumberland.

S IMG_3411.jpg - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)

This morning bright and early (7am rise) we moved on to Campsite Les Coullemieres in the small town of Vermenton not far south east of Auxerre.(ACSI 1625). The reason for the early start was because they close reception for lunch from 12 noon until 2pm. We had thought of a late start and a later arrival but decided on making the < 3hour journey before they shut. We also decided on the motorway (A6) as anyone who knows this area will remember that there is a very steep climb out of Beaune on the A6 which goes on for many miles. We were worried what the alternative D906 would be like. The motorway cost us 18 Euros so we think we made the right decision especially as fuel prices have hit the roof over here. Last week it was 1.80 Euros, this week it's 2.10 Euros.

French Map 14.jpg - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)

Coullemieres is a really attractive campsite with large pitches and plenty of shade. Only 14 Euros a night, 7 nights for 6. Free WIFI. Within walking distance of the old town. Only possible drawback is that it only has three sit down toilets for men, 1 normal one, 1 disabled one and one Turkish one

The river is very nearby and I think I read somewhere that there is a swimming beach. Time to 'vestigate.

Easily reachable from La Havre or Dieppe in 4 or 5 hours Hugh. I seem to remember getting way past this point when out of La Havre in 2019.

Thursday 16th June and another very hot day. We were in touch with the Snoozers and the Eribanauts yesterday. The Snoozers are on a campsite between us as Auxerre and the Eribanauts have move up from the south east of Spain so the temperature is now slightly cooler.

Auxerre. What a splendid city with cheap parking bays under shade all the way along the River Yonne. The City boasts 4 prominent large churches, including the Cathedral, all overlooking the river, The inside of the Cathedral is splendid with a mass of the best stained glass we have ever seen.

When we returned to the campsite we 'vestigated the River Cure which is only about 50 feet outside the campsite entrance. There is a nice piece of parkland there with a beach into the river, many people were swimming. The River Yonne and Cure were used for bringing felled trees to the waterside and floated down river. There are several old photos at the riverside showing the process and the carnival that the workers indulged in when the job was complete.

From memory, the site we stayed at to visit Auxerre was 'Les Ceriselles' a few miles from the city along the Yonne towpath.

It's a lovely area and well worth a visit.

EDIT: campsite is located in Vincelles.
