Was about to book one night at at the CMC site in Edinburgh but balked at the £38.50 price tag. Is this happening all over?

I'm afraid so. I believe they needed to get medical assistance to Randa when he paid £49 for a night at Brighton.
Folk on the C&MC forum are regularly posting about costs. Many now use CL's whenever possible, I know we do. Shop around and for £15 - £20 you can usually find something with hook up, loo, electrics and Wi-Fi.

Yes you're correct Mr Motters but I managed to come around when we were spending about 16 to 18 Euros for the same class of camp site in France with the addition of a swimming pool and Free Wifi. No forward booking.
Feeling a lot better now with good quality wine prices at around 3 or 4 euros a bottle and fuel prices as of today 2 euros a litre which is about £1.72 litre converted to UK price.

One of the interesting drivers behind increased prices is - of course - increased energy costs for the site. This I understand. What puzzles me is that there seems little effort to reduce energy usage on the site. Let me explain.
We spent a pleasant week at Moreton-in-Marsh t'other week. Of course not being allowed to arrive until 1pm makes a hole in day 1....However that's not the point. What I do not understand is why - at 2am the elephant house is still being heated to normal use temperatures? Dropping a few degrees won't kill anyone at that time in the morning. For that matter, why, on a day when it was 24C is the elephant house still being heated to he same temperature? With the various open windows - which are nice - they are effective trying to heat the world, which is a bad idea I think.
Apart from the disgusting habits of some members the one thing I hate about trying to shower in that situation is that the heat and humidity make it almost impossible to actually get dry!!!
Having said that - the roof structure does make me wonder whether they're using air source heat pumps.

Think in terms of 'sound effects' or to put it another way - lots of flatulent grunting.....

If you think C&MC sites have gone up, then try Eurotunnel in August - best price (with Eriba) £735 return (non changeable or refundable), Flexi-fare £1300...
Dover-Calais cheapest ferry £499 return.
Cheapest fare we could find anywhere - Harwich to the Hook £395 return.
What madness is this?

This is where planning ahead works. A single crossing on the Dover - Calais route is now just a little less than a return used to be. When we looked earlier in the year Euro tunnel was cheaper, about £250 one way against £300 for the boat. These are for 04:30 crossings not in peak school holiday times.
The best deal we had was Hook of Holland to Harwich through the C&MC at less than £100 one way. The other bargain is DFDS on the Newhaven - Dieppe crossing. Better still if you are 60+ and book over the phone as you get 20 % off.

We stayed at Buxton CMC last weekend, three nights at an average of £32 a night. And the elephant house was empty whenever I visited and was not being heated.
I had nothing to do on this hot afternoon

Energy prices have risen all over europe so I don't think the British campsites can use it as an excuse! You pay a fortune and you can't even do what you want....... potty!

I've tried the C&MC site for peak summer holiday times, return trip on Harwich - Hook of Holland, out 31st July 9am, back 19th Aug 2.15pm.
It is showing £337.30.
Dover- Calais on same dates, mid day is coming up at £408 with DFDS.

I've just checked our early booked in year Hook of Holland to Harwich, through the C&MC. This has gone up from £100 to £118.
The definites are it is obviously cheaper out of season, but we cannot all go at those times.
Equally early booking pays dividends, as does doing through the C&MC (but you lack flexibility on changes etc) Early morning out and evening meal time back also reduce costs.
It does pay to be an ocd and an anorak when it comes to your crossings.

Back to C&MC sites... Just back from a week away to Devon. Triton plus 2 adults, plus awning.
First night on a CL near Duxford was £15 a night including 5amp electric (no facilities). Excellent.
Then one night at Longleat C&MC site (£32) also excellent, immaculate facilities and very quiet - except for the sea lions!
Next on to Modury C&MC site in Devon (£25.40 a night for 4 nights) which was lovely and also really quiet. Spotless facilities (not heated!)
And the last night at Salisbury Hillside C&MC site £27.90 a night). A gem of a site - tight for long units, but we really liked it. Well shaded and very hilly - maxed out our levelling abilities on the Triton!
Overall, I have to say it was all good value - very helpful staff, excellent facilities (the last site opened up the disabled toilets whilst they cleaned the main ones - a great idea) and really quiet nights. No jobsworth wardens on these sites and we felt they were all good value.
I got home to find our home's electric consumption while we were away was £22 - puts the costs in perspective...
