Fforest Fields and the national show caves are on the map but I still need at least a lay-by or stopping place between point C and there for a break (the seat in the pickup is not the most comfortable and my as...err bottom goes a bit numb after a couple of hours)

Don't miss out on Scotland. I don't know if you've been - especially the north west -
I had a week on Skye once in a croft wonderful place in September it was so no little biters
Coming from "the flatlands I love the mountain scenery so the dales and the peak district and north Wales have all been destinations but never south Wales hence this trip.

Right, if it's the caves you want, did you know there's a campsite at the caves? here's the link:
http://www.coolcamping.co.uk/campsites/u.../61-dan-yr-ogof
We're only 10 miles from you there.
Whilst there it's a 10 mile drive to the waterfalls in our valley:http://www.visitnpt.co.uk/default.aspx?page=6245
Plenty to see.
From the caves, it's about 90 minutes towing to Ffforest Ffields. The heart of the Beacons is between the two locations so you could visit from both if you don't want to add an extra stop to your itinerary.
Oxford to Dan yr Ogof
? Why not stop at Abergavenny. It's about 2 1/2 hours from Oxford. Plenty to see. From Abergavenny you're looking at 1 1/2 hours to the caves.

footnote for SDA (or should I say footplate?): The train scene for "The Young Winston" was filmed on the mountain overlooking Dan yr Ogof

Is that the same place as this ?

Those waterfalls look just the thing to me just bookmarked the page.

Stopping anywhere I can park about 30 feet of truck and caravan would be nice or is there a site there?

Yes that's the place Nev.
Regarding the waterfalls, as well as the long walk to visit half a dozen falls at the top of the valley we also have this big one just across the field from us which was harnessed during the Industrial Revolution and before: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melincourt_Falls
and at the lower end of the valley you have: https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/aberdul...-and-waterfall/
which is only a mile or so from the town of Neath.

This is an interesting link Nev.
There is a small camp site in Gilwern which is just a few miles from Abergavenny. Haven't stayed there for >30 years however, From there, the canals, tramroads and Big Pit are easily reachable.

Thanks Roger lots to think about
Must go now, I need to get the bottom vent off the puck to see if I can clean out the burner for the fridge so I can sell it
(just what I need crawling under a puck)

we tend to close eyes point on the map and where ever finger lands look for a site in the area
I might add this sometimes doesn't work specially if finger lands on large blue area
once arriving on finger point area if landed on green
we then go out and explore and tend to go off the tourist path and find other interesting places, and chat to the locals
I suppose really we never have a plan and just go with the flow
our first thoughts are to find local immenties for another meal, then look for tourist brown signs and note places to veer off to
im not sure if your a ccc or cc club member, but sometimes rallies can be held in areas where no campsite, like behind a village hall or school and can be a good night stop during summer some field sites are open for a month at a less rate than the campsite..
(some rally sites with ccc don't require you to book)
the Brecon mountain railway is worth a visit, and we found accidently after a map page loss.
perhaps folk from your chosen touring areas can suggest local points, must sees, places to eat that are not health issues

Looks as thought your VW Navi is about as good as mine then, Roger. Here we are in the Lake District travelling along this 'A' classified road when suddenly the bloody thing comes to an end. No wonder you all think the roads are wonderful on the Continent.
