Where and why
in Where did you go, what did you do, who did you meet? Sat Nov 30, 2013 8:11 amby ellen (deleted)
Mark and me were chatting about the places we are hoping to visit next year. Our choice of destination usually revolves around being able to spot a variety of wildlife and if possible good walking ares with great views. It got me thinking what factors do others take into consideration when choosing their destinations? The best sightings for us was at Cromarty lighthouse, Inverness, the dolphins are so close tto the shore you feel like you could touch them. We spotted an otter from the Bunree CC site. At Bolton Abbey we have seen deer in the woods and at Meathop Fell the sight and sounds of the owls was pretty awesome.next year we hope to make Dumfries and Galloway and see what that region of Scotland has to offer, midge repellent at the ready.!!

Coming from the flatlands of East Anglia I like to see the mountains and valleys when I go away hence my planned trip to Wales and coming back round by Derbyshire hopefully I will be able somewhere to sit out and see the stars sometime too.
When I was a small hobgoblin street lights only had a 150w bulb and little bits of mirror to reflect the light downward and were few and far between and you could look up and see a whole sky full of stars, with all those awful orange lights these days it's not often that I see them now.
Any wildlife will d be a bonus

And you'll get plenty of that in Brecon Nev, as long as the weather is kind to you Brecon Dark Skies
Over recent years, we've been able to follow the Space Station on several occasions for as long as 10 minutes as it tracks its course in the skies above our valley.
Ellen, as far as walking, wildlife and views is concerned, you could do a lot worse than pitch up near to where we live. We're about 20 miles from Brecon and 20 miles from the Gower. When we stayed on the Gower in September we took advantage of the dozens of walking routes on offer, many of them on the Welsh Coastal Path. Pembrokeshire also offers spectacular scenery and wild life.
We were also impressed with Glastonbury where we hired cycles and explored the Somerset Levels.

Your part of Wales sounds incredible with dark skies as well as wonderful walks etc R. Thinking about it, I bet it's midge free, mmmm. Maybe Dumfries may have some opposition next year.thank you for the Dark skies link, the video is fantastic, living just outside of Manchester we are lucky to see a handful of stars. Ellen.

I bet and most of those are from Coronation Street....
This is a smashing place to live but we don't perhaps appreciate it so much because we were dragged up in the area. If you want to think of it as a contender then let us know and we can give you some more information.
The beauty of South Wales is once you've arrived at Brecon (probably about 3 to 4 hours for you) then everywhere south and west is easily accessible with good road links. For us we could probably do St Davids in 90 minutes.
