Nor did England but the area later recognised as Wales did.

Correct, but to be pedantic I didnt say England did nor Scotland or any other country for that matter either since all are relatively recent man-made concepts:)

Here's tip. Bing Maps come with an ordinance survey view option.

And knowing very well that fact I meant it as a joke as everyone now accepts that the blue stones came from the area now known as Wales.
I'll know on the future that you don't recognise a joke.

What is interesting Steve and Just Chillin is the fact that there is a way to see this ancient momument without paying the earth.
However, nobody who is drawn to the visitor centre is told this, as far as I can see.
It was the same at the Giant's Causeway. Had we not been tipped off then we would have believed that the only option was to roll up to the NT carpark and pay £24 to park with an inclusive ticket to the side show followed by the walk down to the Causeway.
However,by paying £3 at the nearby railway station and walking an additional 200 metres you could walk through the several uniformed staff at the tunnel entrance before walking down to the stones.

On a similar point, we are in Scotland at present and wanted to see The Falkirk Wheel. The no way to avoid parking is £3.50. They are proud it's an all day cost, but you only need Les than an hour and that's allowing time to wait to see it go round.
Just down the road we moved on to see the impressive Falkirk Kelpies and nice big free car parks. Why the difference?

Has something changed at the Kelpies then? When we went in 2017 the car park charged until 6 pm. We went in the evening when it was free and had the added bonus of seeing the Kelpies illuminated, magnificent sight.
Having said that we’ve just got back from Scotland and were pleasantly surprised by the majority of free car parks.

Many years ago I did a study of Stourhead Gardens and have expressed an interest in visiting there ever since.

They are just up the road but with little change from £50 for the both of us, it costs too much.

Yes, I know that joining the NT would be a cheaper option but there are very few NT properties in our area of the Nation. Coupled with that we would have to be CADW members and when in England, the English Heritage. We had intended to go abroad this year so being members of any of them/all of them wasn't an option.

I'm sure many folk would agree that similar "Tourist Attractions" abroad cost very little by comparison.

We have struck lucky with National Trust Scotland. Mrs eribaMotters used to work for John Lewis and had kept full benefits since early retirement. This used to include National Trust and English Heritage. They were dropped a year ago but surprisingly NT Scotland is still a freebie, so we have given it good use over the last few days.

Why do you have to be CADW members?

If you ever needed a reason to join the National Trust, Stourhead is it.

It's an absolutely sublime place. We've been a couple of times (when were staying at Lower Liston), and I'd go again tomorrow if I could.

I think you're missing out by not joining. There might not be dozens of their places within a five minute walk of your gaff, but come on - it's tenner a month for the pair of you if you pay on the drip.

You almost certainly pay more than that for one of those piles of nosh that you post pictures of, and I guarantee the memory of Stourhead will stay with you far, far longer than the memory of a plate of bangers and chips.

Being careful with money is all very laudable, but in this case I think your parsimony is misdirected.

You're too tight by half, old fruit

We have to be lovely boy. We're OAPs. Wrong time of year for Stourhead as well, I'm guessing.

Today we moved back up country to Lacock. https://www.piccadillylacock.co.uk/

What a lovely campsite and a very friendly owner. We are just across a busy road from Lacock village. No WIFI so having to link the 4G to computer by phone

Meh. I don't buy that load of OAP horse feathers. It works out at thirty-odd pence a day. Much less than your subscription to Hair Shirt Weekly.

And there is no wrong time of year for Stourhead. These things were designed to blow your socks off all year round.

Didn't you say you did a study of Stourhead? You must have been gawping out of the window instead of studying.

Yep, you got me. No point debating belonging to UK Trusts etc when we don't usually spend our vacations in the UK.
Without being a member there are no concessions and often there is no cross over between the various trusts. CADW doesn't accept NT nor does English Heritage as far as I'm aware.
Visitors to this country of ours must be taken aback by the amount they are asked to pay to visit Houses, Gardens and Monuments.
Once upon a time we could select to visit a gardens only without visiting a House but nowadays they have packaged it so that you are obliged to visit the Information Centre and read all the guff about this and that. Stuff you can find on WIFI and probably already know about. It's the large dollop of lettuce that is added to your meal to look as though your getting a lot for your money.
As we are still going through the Covid scare many are only now offering garden tours but the prices do not truly reflect that fact.
Last year as we knew we would not be going abroad we did take advantage of the NT and were able to visit a few places, gardens only, using our membership but unless we set our future sights on travelling in the U K only, membership costs would not be value for money.

NT Scotland does concession prices to join. Couple I think is £87 and you get all the benefits in other countries who are affiliated. NT England being one of them.

Hi Stewart. Yes, that's the way we went as our plan was to visit much of the east of Scotland last year until Covid altered our plans.
We were able to use NT Scotland in a few places in North Wales and the North of England
