What I did on my holiday!

Having booked tickets for the Edinburgh Tattoo and the Breamar Highland Gathering in 2020 we got really organised and booked sites. Then 2020 didn’t happen! So we simply moved all bookings to 2021. Then they cancelled the Tattoo again. We decided to go anyway but cancelled the Edinburgh site, didn’t fancy a big city and crowds plus we’ve been to Edinburgh several times.
Our first stop was a CMC CL near Thirsk, CL 1708 Primrose Hill. We wanted to stay this side of Sutton Bank but were dropping off two of the grandchildren to their parents in a log cabin in Keldy. A bit tight with the four of us for two nights but we managed. This is a lovely little farm site, no facilities but stunning views. £14.50 per night.
Next stop was on a friends drive in Hawick for one night.
Then a C&CC CS 240 at Errol near Dundee. A fully serviced pitch but no facilities. £15 per night. We caught up with family at St Andrews and had a good day in Dundee. Parked over the road bridge (free) and walked in and back. New V&A is a stunning building and the waterfront is being improved.
Next was a week at CMC CL1935 Drummond Fish Farm, Lochearnhead. Site right on the loch side. Facilities £20 a night. We explored the local area, had a good walk up Ben Lawers and saw an eagle. The fish farm is a little noisy with lorries first thing but still worth it.
Next was a C&CC CS 237 at Lettershaws. Again no facilities but so much space, not far off the M74 but peaceful, only £10 per night.
Then our last week at C&CC CS 220 Mains of Auchenfranco near Dumfries, no facilities but a lovely quiet secluded site. £14 per night.
Up until 2days before we came home on 11th September we had stunning weather, occasionally it was too hot, can I say that? We took the awning down to avoid the forecasted rain. Slight problem then, where to shower? We use a camping shower in the awning. As our pitch was hedged on three sides we simply showered “al fresco” behind the van. Dave and Bunny would be proud of us 😂
We didn’t set out to use no facility sites but when our plans changed (we discovered that the Gathering had been cancelled and they forgot to tell us) we couldn’t book any of the club sites. Because we knew we would be holidaying in the UK this year we joined the CMC, already members of the C&CC. Neither club had any vacancies anywhere in Scotland, we weren’t set on any particular area or route. It seems they have more members than pitches available. To be honest the CS and CL’s were all peaceful sites with loads of room and very cheap. The camping shower works a treat in the awning and Eriba’s have toilets so there really isn’t an issue. We’re beginning to think this is the way to go, they can keep their big sites.

We are off to Stirling on Thursday for 8 nights, then if weather holds Ayr for 3 nights, then not sure.
By the time we get back to Merseyside we will have been to:-
- Devon, Totnes twice
- Somerset, Wells and Weston-Super-mare
- Dorset, Wareham
- Shropshire, Dorrington
- York
- Durham
- Northumberland, Craster
- Carlisle
- Stirling
- Ayr
About 2,500 miles, 11 sites of which 2 full C&MC, 5 CL's, 4 independent for 50 nights.
We might get down to North Devon again in late Oct, early Nov if weather holds to go house hunting.

Colin

ps - looking forward to 10/12 weeks out of season in Europe next year with great facilities and sensible site fees.

Showering out of doors Julie? I hope Al Fresco kept his eyes shut. You know what these Italians are like.
