I think the 230v AC to 12v DC transformer is the likely source of the heat.
That would make sense to me. In my case and Simon's (the OP's) this is happening only when there's EHU input.

Hi,

What puzzles me is that with mains connected as long as only the fridge is on there is no heat from the fuse box, only when i start switching on all the lights does it start to get hot.
If i turn the fridge off and leave the lights on it cools down.

Ive noticed theres a box which says booster next to the fuse box, this has a green bulb which im guessing lights up when running but so far i havent seen it light up, should this light always be on?

Thanks

That's most likely the booster for charging the battery when you're towing. It raises the voltage from the car's alternator to the caravan battery, and won't come on unless you're hitched up to the car and its engine is running.

Can you post some photographs of your electrics set-up, including one or two with the cover off the transformer/fuse box?

It'd help a lot.

The green light might not even come on with the engine running until the alternator turns out sufficient power. You may need to increase the revs beyond tick over.

The fridge is powered from the mains when the van is on ehu so won't make any difference to the transformer load and when on 12v it is powered by your car battery. I don't think it's relevant whether it's on or off.

Unless your lights are leds, if you have three on at the same time your charger should deliver about 14.5v.

I'd suggest that you take some voltage readings to find out what's happening under different conditions. Do you have a multimeter available?

Yeah, yeah. I just thought Simon was wondering what it was, so I took the liberty of telling him.

I didn't realise I had to ask permission first.

Sheesh. Some people, eh?

Well, I'll go to the foot of our stairs!

I've just read through all of the thread and can't see why you've taken the hump - and you were being so nice to everyone for a change, in fact so nice that I can hear the rustling of new leaves being turned over at Château le Pewk from here.

So there!

I think we need voltmeter readings, don't you?

Taken the hump? Me? Good Lord, no.

You must be mistaking me for someone who takes the hump. It's not a person I recognise.

And yes, my sage (and onion) chum, I believe you to be correct in requesting voltmeter readings. That's what we need, voltmeter readings.

Thousands of 'em.

Me

Hi,

I dont have a voltmeter at the moment but will try to get hold of one.

I'll try to post a pic as soon as poss once ive worked out how to do it.

I noticed a 15amp fuse was missing from the fuse box so have put one in, dont think its made any difference though.

Since that first couple of times with power being plugged in it doesnt seem to be as hot as before and theres certainly no burning saucepan handle smell

Is it normal for it to be warm or should it be stone cold?

Thanks
Rgds

@ Hob, thanks for that.

Can anybody tell me if its normal for the fuse box transformer thingy to be warm to mildly hot ?(very lower end of hot)

It's certainly normal for a transformer to get pretty warm.

Any luck with the photos, Simon?

According to this article a definite 'yes'.

The higher the transformer efficiency, the lower the heat gain. From previous experience, I would doubt if the transformer used in a BIP (or its associated control circuitry) could be described as 'efficient'.
