Awning rail on pop top

We have a 2003 Troll. This has an additional awning rail fixed to the side of the pop top. I presume that this is not an original fitment?
Would it be wise to fit a canopy to this rail......I have a feeling that once the pop top is raised it would be unwise to put any additional lateral strain on it.

I've seen this kind of thing once or twice before where the Eriba owner is using the rail to accommodate a Isabella Shadow sunshade or similar. It overcomes the problem of a shallow slope.
