Short stop before ferry - Portsmouth area?

Hi Eribists,
We are off to Northern Spain and Portugal in 2 weeks and will be traveling down late evening with the aim of getting to Portsmouth area in the early hours.
I’m after ideas on where it might be possible to stop for a few hours sleep before boarding the ferry in the morning.
It’s not possible for us to leave early in order to find a site, as my OH is in work until the afternoon.
Thanks in advance

Rookesbury Park CC site near near Wickham has a large area for those leaving for a ferry and it's about 20 minutes to Portsmouth.

Thanks, but doubt we could make it at a time we can check in somewhere, as stated in my initial post.

Sorry, could have explained it better. IIRC the area also doubles as a late arrivals area and is outside the main barrier. So you could pitch there for a few hours and be gone before anyone knew you'd been there. Check out the sites details on the CCM website.

That’s interesting, I’ll look into this.
Thank you!

It would appear you can park at the port.

http://www.brittany-ferries.co.uk/guides...tsmouth#parking

that states 'If you have an early morning sailing caravans / motorhomes can be parked in the check-in lanes after midnight. The vehicle is parked at your own risk and should not be left unattended. Please note that no facilities are open overnight.'

We arrived back quite late on the ferry from Bilbao and needed somewhere to stay overnight before completing our onward journey.

We stayed at Ellerslie house in Fareham, only a couple of miles from the terminal. The were very helpful and used to having late arrivals from the ferry. We were allowed to pitch up and sort out payment the following morning. They even very helpfully hooked up a hose so we could rinse off our little puck after she spent the night on the outside deck on the economy ferry!
