weights and towing in France

If it is being towed by a French registered vehicle and if it exceeds 500kg PTAC (loaded weight) then, by law, it requires to be registered and have a Certificat d'Immatriculation (carte grise).

Can someone tell me...?

I will be using my Peugeot 3008 (MPM 2100kg) to tow my Puck (max 600kg) in France and Belgium in June. The only figures I can find is for vehicles towing over GTM 3500kg.

Will I be restricted to any speed limits?

I know it does not make any sense, but the law relates to max permissible gross train weights over 3500kg. and not actual gross train weights. I'm guessing your Peugeot 3008 has a mas gross train weight of about 3700kg, so you have to tow at lower speeds, even though you are pulling a nice lightweight Puck.

Colin's correct.

We have a Touran which is capably of towing trailer/caravans up to 1500kg. The Touran weighs in at about 2100kg (can't quite remember), which gives a maximum train weight of 3600 kg. (over 3500 kg). Therefore I am not allowed to tow anywhere in France at over 50 mph. It matters not a jot that our Troll is only rated at 1000kg maximum when loaded.

Unfortunately, although a crazy law, all these specs are spelled out just inside the passenger door column of the car for anybody to see.

Thanks gents for your replies. My Pug 3008 seems to have some conflicting numbers...

There are no specs on the door post, just tyre pressures. I have checked all 4 doors, will look further when it's not raining.

My V5 suggests the same figures as Randa's Touran. Max permissible mass of 2100kg (mass in service 1614kg). The technical permissible towable mass of trailer is shown as 1500kg. Most websites shows it as 1300kg.

Accepting it is best to go with the V5 figures I will stick to the lower speeds. Do I read it right on deal carriageways it is 90kph (55mph) and single lanes 80kph (50mph)?

Since July last year the maximum speed limit on any French 2 lane road is now 80 km/hr (50 mph). Usually, on motorways and peages it's normally 90, 110 or 130 km/hr dependant on signage and whether it's raining or not.

If you fall foul of the > 3,500 km then it's 80 km/h (50mph). Likewise in the rest of Europe any caravan is restricted to 80km/hr unless while in Germany you get your van TUV tested and gain a 100 km/h sticker for the back.

What we've found is that unlike Death Race UK motorways, European roads are safer and we pick a nice spot in the slow lane and set our cruise control to that of the lorries (which is around 58/60 mph) and bowl along at that pace. It normally isn't nose to tail with lorries as they are well spaced. However if we come to a bit of a convoy I just up my speed and pass them before slowing down again once I've cleared them.

Thanks for the link, very useful. I will look under the bonnet tomorrow.

Just as well I'm taking the modern. My Morris Traveller would confuse them considering there isn't a VIM plate, nor does it have a weight listed on the V5!

At a reported 16.5cwt (828kg) and allowing 80% towing allowance that would make it under 1500kg total. Being well under the 3500kg mentioned it suggests I could go over the 80kmh restriction. Managing that would be a miracle...

According to the leaflets they used to give out at Dover, you need to add the max permitted towing weight for your vehicle to the max permitted fully loaded weight of your vehicle. If this exceeds 3500kg, you need to observe the lower speed limits of 80 and 90 km/hr.
For our 2010 2l 150bhp 3008, this works out as 3480kg (2080 kg fully loaded plus 1400kg max braked trailer). This is just within legal limits but I must admit we tend to stick to 90 km/ hr in most instances as I don't fancy trying to argue with a gendarme about 20kg! In any case, I'm on holiday so why rush?
If you have the petrol 3008 or smaller diesel, you are probably even lower max weight. Can't speak for the newer 3008 though...

Thanks for that. I have the 2.0 HDi (163bhp) Exclusive 5d Auto so I'm sticking with being over the limit. It will not feel the Puck behind it so I guess I'll have to use my speed limiter just in case I forget it's there...

Is the 2nd weight my max permissible gross train weight?
It's going to be a long slow drive South this year if that's the case

Yep saw that when I was searching for info so presume Train weight is the figure that matters? which would equate to my 4305kg as mine is a manual so lighter than auto I think
Thanks Randa
