Eriba Wheel Drums

Saw this photo on facebook today. (Italy)

Can anyone tell me why the wheel drum outer is fluted? Is it to dissipate heat? It's not standard is it?

Could also be for strength/weight ratio, flutes allowing a thinner main body thickness.

It could also be they were what were cheapest at the time when ALKO were sourcing bits for the chassis - running gear.
