Some time after my Cortina was wrecked, I had a visit from the law asking a lot of questions. Turns out someone had dossed down in the back and passed away. A couple of years later I had a VW 1600TL which expired and was sent to the great car park in the sky. A couple of months later, guess what, the law visited. Someone who turned out to be a vagrant had dossed down in the back and passed away. I suppose when I said "not again" it wasn't the wisest comment!

Cabbie 37, Your Riley is a peach mate, love it.

They are building a 7 special in Practical classics at the moment, looks like it will be a good job when complete.
Where about's in the Cotswolds is the get together. Do you live in that area?

Some great tales here.

My first car has a tale to it. In 1972 when I was a student a mate who was older asked me and a another mate if we wanted to buy an old car together for the summer term. He already had an Escort but had seen this "old banger" in the garage he took his car in to be fixed and the bloke wanted shut. He would sell us it for £30, which was a tenner each. It had three months MOT and was driveable. He said it was a Ford Capri so which young lad wouldn't want a Capri for the summer - so I chucked in my £10

When it turned up it was a Capri but not the GTXLR model we had in our heads. It was a Ford Classic Capri, with only two doors one of which wouldn't open - we had to climb in through the window....!

Phil immediately demanded his tenner back so I had to chuck in an extra fiver. Not sure how safe it was but we had about a month's fun with it. I drove it most as Dick has his flash Ford Escort, .but then some old chap saw it and gave us £50 on the spot for it. We jumped at it as it had started to make some even odder noises. Result.

I am really shocked to see that Skoderiba also owned one of these as I have never know anyone else to have one.It was flash inits own way and looked a bit American. I have found a picture of one in a book but I'm sure ours was white.

Love the Capri story!

Info on the Austin 7 celebration can be found here https://a7centenary.com/ but I should mention that it is a 'closed' event and isn't open to the public. It is just not something that the organisers can cope with and the College can allow for security reasons... Buy that Chummy and enter!!

My first car was a 750 Renault , spent four months during her up . Engine over hall , repaint , proudly took her for her MOT the engineer put her up on his ramp and then proceeded to poke his screwdriver through the underside chassis and floor and failing her. Never got her on the road . Scrap

Love that Isetta Tom

When we all had scooters in the 1960s a young mate got rid of his Lambretta and turned up in one of these. The young mod girls loved it as they could go out with him & stay dry - not like their friends on the back of our scooters. We all told him that he only pulled smart girls cos of his "bubble car". Not a hint of jealousy there then.......................

First car was a Ford Anglia 105E deluxe Black with a light grey roof. Was in a garage on the Newton Abbott road. Had two big rust holes in each front wing.
Bought it for £30 and paid £30 for two new wings.
Used to fill up tank for £2.12/6 .
Stupidly had it re sprayed metallic green as that was in vogue at the time. Reg 994 HUO

My first car was a 1978 Mini 1275GT. Followed not long after with an MGB Roadster which I still have 33 years later. My daily car is a Suzuki Jimny.

Mine was a vile mauve Mazda that pinked all the time and had very suspect brakes. The only consolation was that when my ex husband insisted that I could get the bus because he NEEDEED it, she always broken down and left him stranded. 🤔😁😁😁

You can almost still feel the pride we felt in these first cars......................

To put us all in our places you need to read this book

Worlds Worst Cars.jpg - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)

I was given this with some other books this week. Our son-in-laws mother has recently retired and she has decided that the house is too cluttered. Her husband has been told to give away most of his books. This arrived with a number of others.

Going through it I was shocked to find that it was rubbishing lots of cars I have owned or would have liked to have owned or nearly bought in desperation.......!

It started with my lovely Alfasud...........not sure I agree with all his choices

I'm going to pass it on to the charity shop when they open up again.. If anyone wants to have it I will send it to you as long as you pay the postage. PM me you want me to weigh it & see how much Post Office will charge.

Mine was a Renault 8 - a hand painted black, orange and white rear engined monstrosity that I bought for £100.00 in 1973 - It had so much rust you could see the road if you looked down through the sides of the front boot lid and the rear bonnet - it also performed interesting sideway drifts around roundabouts if you went above 25mph! - I still remember the registration number though CER 305C - Sold it 3 years later for £150.00.

Aah, the Alfasud. What a cracking car, so brilliant as a Rally car. Neil and I met (1981) when we were both working for an Alfa Romeo dealer, he was a mechanic and I was the Service receptionist and switchboard operator. The firm sponsored a Rally team and provided an Alfasud which spent a lot of time in the workshop. The biggest issue was that in common with all Italians cars of that era they practically dissolved in the rain, they were made out of the most awful cheap steel ☹️

You guys have had some fine cars, amazing how many of these cars were not that old, but had rusted badly. You forget things like that with modern cars.

I was chatting with my mate about old cars, things like having to pump the screen wash, no headrests, no radio, seat belt etc.
God, we are spoiled these days, but I older cars had more sole. who wishes they still had their first car.
