Yesterday we had a brief conversation with a couple from the Czech Republic. They turned up to park their car alongside their large Burnster Belcato caravan which was there before we arrived.
Thier car was a large Tesla SUV electric car. He reckons on only getting 200 Kms out of her when towing.
Beautiful car though in deep cherry red. We hoped to chat some more this morning but they were gone before 9am like a whisper. We didn't hear them go.

I think you must have had a hard day and slept well.
Electric cars tow long distance towing still not a reality, but some of the latest plug in hybrids coming out look promising. Up to 80 miles solo should be good for running around and then a 10 gallon tank with the petrol engine perfect for towing long distances.

An electric car makes a great tow vehicle, all that torque makes it a breeze! The issue isn’t really the range of the vehicle- stopping for 20mins every few 100miles shouldn’t be a hardship. Rather it’s the availability of decent chargers. With their Tesla they have ready access to the best charging network so it’s probably less of a problem for them. Things would be improved for us campers if campsites installed a few chargers or were more accepting/set up for people plugging in at their pitch.

That sounds like a good idea BR. It's not as though there's a shortage of electricity on most campsites f the extra revenue they would make would always come on handy.
They don't need a huge number just a booking system like the washing machines.

Tomorrow I have a 300 mile tow from Devon to Lincolnshire. I will leave after a leisurely breakfast and arrive late afternoon. I might stop once for fuel which will only take a few minutes.
If I was towing with an electric car I would be looking at having to spend two days for this trip. I would also have to unhitch my van to charge the car when I found a charger that was available/working.
I would welcome driving an electric car, and will buy one when:-
- they become affordable to buy
- the insurance premiums are lower and in line with ICE vehicles
- when the public charging network is up the standard it should be
- the public charging network supply electricity at the rate your domestic supply charges
- you can pull into a charge area with a caravan without having to un-hitch
- campsites have suitable charging points
I do not wish to sound negative, but I'm buying something to do a job and at the present an electric car is not a viable purchase for my needs. A PHEV would be though.

But it's not a 30 minute stop, is it? You have to find somewhere to leave (safely) your caravan whilst you charge your car. Which probably means a campsite, which means a stop over. I'm in agreement with Colin here - not yet a sensible, feasible option to tow long distances with an electric car. i met and chatted to several Dutch electric tow car campers in France in 2023 - they reckoned their towing range was half their normal range. One was a Long-Range Tesla and they got less than 200 miles. With that I reckoned I couldn't even get to Dover on a single charge, then I'd have needed two recharges to get to Epernay in northern France. I did it on one tank of diesel. IF you could charge up whilst remaining hitched, then that could be a game changer.
And Teslas are not really very robust as tow cars...

Like Colin I feel a long way from towing with an electric car but may consider a hybrid when we next change car
My son-in-law has had electric cars for ages but has no need to tow. He has had a Tesla for about three years and he seems to get great pleasure from planning out his longer distance journeys to reach Tesla chargers. He works in designing computer programmes and it all appeals to his character and way of thinking. Our daughter thinks totally differently and gets range anxiety when she drives it in Greater Manchester.
I'm afraid that I am of that ilk. I do love the look of the new electric VW campers though...........................

I would expect that most people would park their trailer in a space near the charger, or if not busy just park next to the charger with it attached.
Don’t get me wrong, there are valid points made in this thread and I don’t tow with an electric vehicle because of some of them. But wild doomsaying isn’t very productive.

I’d love an electric car; the majority of my colleagues drive them now but they don’t do the miles I do.
I’m unlikely to go for one though as I tend to fill with diesel only when the yellow warning appears. My friend can’t charge his at home yet, and he had to drive 19 miles earlier this week to find a charge after visiting 3 stations with broken chargers or long queues of equally desperate people.
I just know that I’d be calling the AA eventually.😂😬
