Front Wheel spin on grass. Do I need a heavier car?

Eriba Touring 410 1991. First times out towing with KIA PROCEED 1.5 T-GDi ISG GT-LINE.

Had lack of grip / wheel spin on grass esp. with any incline.
This suggests to me that there isn't enough weight on the front wheels with caravan attached, and car loaded up in the back.

Should I look for a heavier car, or better tyres? Thank you for any advice you can give.

I would say wheelspin on grass is fairly common, but the big thing to check is the nose weight of your Eriba. I'm assuming the max your towbar will accept is 75kg, but I'd aim at 60kg.
You do not need to change your car. I tow a significantly heavier Eriba Feeling at typically 1350kg with a fairly lightweight Audi A3 1.5L petrol. I have found 60/65kg is my ideal nose weight. If I go any heavier then the front end of the car is light.

I agree with Colin there, single axle drive cars do sometimes bog down. I always use the snooker rule, you must always have at least one foot on the hard ground 😂

It's more likely to be too much weight on the nose, which pushes on the rear of the car and becomes rear axle weight. In such situations you need to be wary that with stuff loaded in the boot you could be exceeding the car's rear axle weight limit

Do you think Mrs RJ might be amenable to providing occasional front-axle ballast as required?

No slight intended by the use of the word ballast, of course. In this context it's just a technical term.

And I guess it'd be sensible to avoid any manoeuvres that might require abrupt braking.

I haven't tried this myself, so I can't vouch for its success.

I have thought about it more than once, mind.

You can get some ribbed plastic strips to fit under your drive wheels to provide traction when the grass is wet.

I've been carrying a pair since 2011 'just in case' and they're still sealed in the original packaging.

Smart buy, eh?
