Removing Truma Heater

As part of my plan to keep our aging Triton 430 GT going for a couple more years (in the hope that we also manage that ), I decided to remove the Truma heater. Three reasons, only used twice in 21 years and it needed repairs to the gas inlet valve, addition of motor mover several years ago severely reduced payload capacity and a calculated 8kg gain would be beneficial and finally the benefit of more wardrobe space gained.

I was helped in achieving this by Randa france's post of 29th June 2021 on this modification. I didn't have a big enough hammer to beat a work surface offcut into the large air intake hole left in the floor so I covered the hole with a thin sheet of aluminium sealed with mastic. Over this I screwed down a a fitted sheet of plywood to the wardrobe floor. The gas pipe to the heater had been removed during last years annual service and the gas valve blanked off at the manifold.

The beautiful and elegant solution to sealing the roof after chimney removal (see eribaMatters post 1st July 2021) was way beyond my skill level so I decided to try to seal the chimney cap. I was lucky to find a straight white plastic pipe joint in B& Q which slotted into the cap. I cut the straight joint in half, carefully removed the circular rubber seal from inside one half and reapplied it to the outside of the cut half. When the half joint was placed into the chimney cap it was located centrally by the circular seal. Silicone was then used create seals at both ends of the inserted half joint. The modified chimney cap was left for 24 hours before being screwed back onto the chimney.

We currently use a an electrical fan heater for those infrequent times when we need heat or to recirculate cold air. This will be replaced with something much quieter in the future....yet to be decided. Ideas welcome.
