]I'm going to nominate Pont-du-Gard in the South of France. I'd seen pictures in guide books previously but nothing could have prepared me for the awesome wonder of this 2000 year old structure that still straddles the River Gard (or Gardon) in a spectacular location. Built to carry water from the springs at Uzès to Nîmes 31 miles (50Km) away, the gradient is only 1 in 3000 but the aqueduct carried an estimated 44 million gallons of water to the city every day, a journey that took 27 hours to complete.
There is a modern visitor centre with a superb museum near the car park. Parking is very expensive (18€) but everything else is free. However, if you arrive on foot or by bike there are no charges. The best route to take is across the Garrigue along the route of the aquaduct so that you arrive at the viewpoint overlooking the 'bridge'. It simply takes your breath away.
