We have had tremendous fun in our Troll 530 since we bought it in May.

It’s a 530 with dinette at both ends and you sleeping across. We love the flexibility. Sleeping on the seats is perfectly okay with our topper but not the same as a mattress and if our daughter doesn’t come with us, we tend to leave the seats made up as a bed.

Which got me thinking about making a frame for a mattress that we can swap in and out depending on which way we fancied - going away with double dinette or going away with the ‘fixed’ bed (leaving the table and sprung seats at home)

I saw some slats in IKEA that are the right dimensions with a bit of modding to allow for the corner curves. I also built two small frames to strengthen and extend the benches to the support the slats. It’s made of two single sets of slats so they can lifted out through the side window when we want to turn it back to a dinette. I’m very conscious of weight so have done my best to limit wood and so on. It is heavier than the sprung seats, table and metal support bars in total but probably no more than an extra 10kg.

Ikea slats £60 and wood from Wickes £10 plus a double mattress (£ sky’s the limit)

Very pleased with the results which gives us the best of both worlds depending on which version we fancy taking away on our trips.

A friend of mine who has Puck L discovered an awning extension in the bottom of his awning bag, this came with a suspended interior tent with a zip door, to save making their bed up in the van this summer they slept on a double airbed, at least 1ft deep, in the extension, and they said it was very comfy.
