Hi-we are the new proud owners of a dutch eriba troll 540 2013.we have NO caravan experience so it’s all been a little stressy It came with one 6kg primagaz propane bottle which we can’t get in france. The little twiny bottles don’t seem to fit in the gas compartment unless placed in the middle with one on top of the other. How do we secure them with the holding straps? There are no predrilled holes in the middle.
Also we have a leisure battery which turns out to be just for the motor mover-feel a little bit cheated over this as presumed it would work lights, pumps etc if needed. Can this be done easily?
Apart from our very first night spent in a snow storm we love our new Troll
Thanks for any advice or help

When I needed to carry both a Calor gas and a CampinGaz cylinder, I made a wooden box to accommodate the smaller cylinder in the locker.

Something similar might solve your problem.

The dumpy 5.2kg twiny has a 30cm diameter and alas will only fit in the centre of the compartment.

Could your gas compartment be bigger?

Your van will most likely be fitted with the Schaudt CSV400 - the blue 12V power supply and distribution/fuse unit.

The simplest way would be to upgrade your existing unit to the CSV409 which is fitted to all UK spec Eribas from about 2010.

This will enable all 12V consumers to run off the leisure battery when not on hookup, leisure battery charging from 230v when on hookup, and charging from the towcar when en route.

An alternative way to achieve the same would be to integrate seperate components (charger, relays etc) to upgrade your existing system.

The first method is easier to achieve but need to factor in buying the CSV409 from Schaudt.

Cost-wise there's not a great deal of difference between the two as the 2nd method is more labour intensive.

We have a cvs 300 so an upgrade may work. Do we need relays etc

if you upgrade your CSV300 to the CSV409 a battery charger and all necessary relays, fuses etc are integrated in the unit.

The only extras required are a 12V On/Off switch + cable, and maybe a 3-core cable connecting the underfloor junction box to the CSV to enable charging from the towcar (if not already installed on your van).

I've bought CSV409s direct from Schaudt in Germany pre Brexit, but I don't know what their export terms and prices are now.

We use Safefill (with a calor lite back-up). Safefill seems to be used all over Europe and I know adapters are available for France and Spain. The cylinders are a little expensive up front but the gas is half the price of Calor. If you put Safefill into the search box on this forum you’ll see quite a bit of previous discussion on the issue. The main concern seems to be the number of refill centres in the U.K. but in the five years since we installed ours we have never had a problem. There is even an app to point you at the nearest distributor.

We’re in France and planning all of our travel here. Can we drill into the gas compartment to move the holders?it seems to be plastic. Are the gas bottle holders fixed prior to the gas compartment being installed?

The back of the gas locker on older vans is a GRP type material. You can drill out the pop rivets holding the gas bottle straps and re-rivet them where you want, but I would advise 3/16" rivets and a 5mm washer where possible to spread the load. On newer vans the bulkhead area is timber and you can screw into this, but be careful as it is about a 24mm thick sandwich of ply/insulation/ply.
