Eriba bodywork repairs

When we got back from France last October, I found that sometime during the holiday our van had been clonked on the left-hand rear corner by person or persons unknown.

At first I thought that this was pretty superficial but a discussion with a certain dealership soon persuaded me otherwise as I was told that a) the damage could not have been done to a worse area of the caravan, b) the damaged panel could not be repaired and c) the only way to fix it was to replace the whole of the lower alloy panel (which is pre-painted at the factory) from the rear light unit to the gas locker. This they could do for a total of £3,300 and they would need the caravan for a week.

Naturally, faced with that sort of outlay, I contacted my insurers who asked for photographs of the damage and a copy of the dealer's estimate. They then arranged for a loss-adjuster to call to look at the damage. The man they sent was rather arrogant and refused even to consider the repair by the dealer. He telephoned later to say that he'd arranged for a local caravan bodywork repair business to contact me to discuss the work. I'm still waiting for them to call.

A month later I again contacted the insurers who arranged for another local company to contact me. They sent a technician round to examine the van and he quickly decided that the job was beyond his expertise. Back to square one.

By this time I was getting pretty hacked off and started exchanging rather robustly worded emails and phone calls with my broker in Southend who was very helpful and the insurer in Liverpool who seemed to think that the repair had been done weeks previously. Eventually the matter was put in the hands of a firm of 'super loss-adjusters' who promised me that they would sort things out to my satisfaction. In the end their managing director suggested that I send photographs of the damaged panel to a company in Southampton who specialise in repairs to caravans and motorhomes of all kinds.

I was still uneasy about having the repair carried out by a non-Eriba specialist but when I spoke to the company's chief technician on the phone he was so confident that I decided to entrust the Triton to his care.

Well, I took it to Spitfire Garage's bodywork shop in Woolston, Southampton on Monday of this week and left the caravan with them. The technician looked at the panel and when I asked if they would peel it back to gain access to the rear, he told me that they would glue pads to the surface to which they would attach rods and then gently pull out the dents with various sized slide hammers before making good the paintwork.

On Wednesday morning I had a call telling me that my van was ready for collection and I fetched it home today (Thursday). To say that I am happy with the workmanship is an understatement. The paint is an absolutely perfect match for the original - but judge for yourselves:

So, a repair that would have cost £3,300 at a dealership was completed to my satisfaction by a bodywork specialist for 'well below £1,000'.

That seems like excellent value to me so if you ever need panel repairs to your beloved Eriba, I can thoroughly recommend Spitfire Garage, Southampton.

The usual disclaimer, I have no connection with the company other than as a satisfied customer.

How on earth could they have justified the £3300 repair?
A few years ago I would have just put filler in the dent and re-sprayed.

Was the £1000 job fully covered by your insurance, less excess? Certainly the final picture look perfect. :)

Brilliant job Get a good person doing these 'glue pad and pulling jobs' it is possible to get good jobs like this, probably no need for painting either !

Not sure if this would be possible on a 'dimple finish' like mine though ? Perhaps ?

I must admit that I was staggered by the estimate when it arrived and I can't say that I blame the insurers for looking for an alternative repair method at much lower cost.

My worry was that as the pre-painted alloy skin is only 0.6mm thick and as alloy stretches when it is creased, it would not be possible to remove the dent so as to achieve an acceptable finish even with filler and respraying. I'm pleased that I was wrong. There was no damage to the inside of the van nor to the frame.

The estimate was as follows:

Remove and replace damage aluminium skin and make good any damage inside. (We would be unable to remove the dent, the whole lower half would have to be replaced)

Aluminium sheet 4m £516.00 plus VAT (bottom panel)

Waist band seal £60 plus VAT

Aluminium floor band £237.94 plus VAT

Sealant adhesive and other parts £150 plus VAT

Total Parts £963.94 plus VAT

Labour £1728.00 plus VAT

Total £2691.91 plus VAT (£3230.33 inc VAT)

(So far as I am aware, the above technique involves removing the original panel and using it as a template for cutting out the openings in the new alloy.)

I had to pay Spitfire Garage £100 policy excess on collection this morning.

Brilliant repair, they seem to be in the right area to take some repairs away from AL ! Shaun.

Great looking job and good as new. I would guess that it's possible AL uses them for work as lots of Main car dealers use these types of repairers to their cars to get them back to new from the little dings they get as my friend who works in car sales told me.

Recently there's been a discussion on Facebook about dent repairs on an Eriba and one of our members, Heather Jones, passed on this information.

After all this, I find I am having to use the reference due to very slight crease on the curve as in a tight spot the motor mover locked on one side and turned it slightly into my pillar. Annoyed all weekend.

Thats the one!!

I'm hoping to find a similar solution close to me Aaron (midlands based so there should be garages similar to Spitfire) - fingers crossed.

I have had a similar ding on my 1997 Triton - a run away tow hitch in storage - and no one leaving a note. I have managed to glue and fibreglass repair the Hella light surround, but now need to tackle the dent. Will likely have to claim through insurance as it seems no one at the parking site is owning up, or didn't know they had done it. Unfortunately with the crinkled aluminium panel, a fill and sand is not possible, and am looking for a specialist pull out non-paint repair, but one that can only be tacked from the front (too much dismantling to go from behind I would have thought). I doubt anyone will be able to get the crease out against the sub-frame - but I am trying to be hopeful. Does anyone know any repairers in or near to Gloucestershire who might quote (anyone had any dealings with Cotswold caravans in Cheltenham or Broadlane Leisure in Alcester, or will it likely need to be a specialist Eriba workshop like Leisure First in Poole) or do I leave it up to the insurance to find a suitable place?
Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Well, Broad Lane are a relatively recently Hymer appointed Eriba Touring dealership who do have a good reputation generally though I can't speak for specifics of bodywork or Eribas as they only took them on last year. Many mainstream caravan dealers tend to sub contract out bodywork repairs and because most caravans are white boxes the bodyshops have no experience of dealing with Touring range type construction. I would let the insurers do the foot slogging to find a place and then be very careful about agreeing to use them. I suspect being specific about a relevant location area might limit your options.
