A Triton 420 is a 2 berth model, with 6ft 7ins long rear lounge benches that can either be used as single beds or as an enormous double. It has a washroom and the kitchen is in the nose.

This example that appeared on Ebay today (thanks Steve) Werbung: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/265197198135?...hAAAOSwqI1gyIHo is listed as a 420, but is unlike any 420 I've ever seen. Yes, it has the washroom and the kitchen in the nose, but at the back it has a fixed 4ft 7ins wide double bed, just like the fixed bed Triton 430. To use up the 2ft space left between the bed and wardrobe/front cupboard two seats have been fitted, opposite each other but with no nearby windows to look out of.

So, it's not really a 420 or a 430, maybe it should be relabelled a 425.

From memory it was only available for 2008/9, and I do not recall seeing any in the UK. The only vans I saw for sale were European main dealer and Markplatts adverts. I thought it was a nice idea, but they obviously did not sell.

The only 2008MY price lists in the archive are German and Dutch and that year Hymer France appeared to be offering a very long list of cost options. I haven't had time to translate the relevant areas to see if that layout was officially listed, but I wonder if they offered the same with the 540 Troll and/or 410 Triton, given they all had the same rear lounge?

I've just spent 5 minutes translating the '08 Dutch price list.

For the 410, 420 and 540 there's an option listed for 'Dinette (single bed-dinette)' at 438 Euro, which can't be the 540's front dinette as that's there as standard, so you have to assume it was an amidships option, though it doesn't specify what happens to the lounge benches to the rear of the optional dinette.

One line further down the cost options is 'Seat/sleeping combination with rear transverse bed', only available for the 420 at a cost of 304 Euro. I'm assuming that is the fixed bed option.

So from all that I suspect that on all three layouts you could get the long rear benches effectively split with the forward 2ft capable of being made into a separate 2ft wide single bed, with 530/430 type rear lounge. The 420 being the only one where the fixed rear bed option was available together with the extra dinette at a total extra cost of 742 Euro.

Whilst this is the first time I've come across a 420 like that, I can also say I've never seen a 410 or 540 with the split rear benches.

It is relisted as obviously not sold and I am finding it difficult to work out why not. Age, spec and price all add up to a good deal. If I was looking for a Triton at that price I would be very interested in it.

I can see why it's not so popular. The fixed bed must be for sleeping across the van which negates the whole purpose of a 420 with the ability of two long tranverse beds. You end up with a strange 2 berth dinette, next to the fixed transverse double with a table that looks like it swings in to place on a large steel arm. The dinette would have to be dismantled to allow access to the fixed bed at night. Really strange layout and a definite no from me!

Strange/different yes, but how nice being able to sit up in bed with a table to your side for a book and drink. Each to there own I suppose.
