EU roaming charges

Before I start can I just say please don’t be too technical. I don’t know a dongle from a hole in the ground.
Off to Europe, checked with my phone provider, EE , £15 a week for two of us x 8 weeks. Now I know we’re fortunate to be able to go for that length of time but even my poor maths makes that £240. Is there a cheaper way to do this, don’t need to stream movies to my phone but want to email, use Google Maps, ring campsites and WhatsApp the family back home. Is this the price we have to pay for Brexit or have I missed a trick?

I'm with Lebara SIM only pay monthly with no contract, cancel at any time. They include EU roaming free. My choice of plan is £5 per month. 5 gig of data which I never use up.

You could could switch to something like that if your not in a contract or get a SIM only monthly deal just for your holiday.

Wow Steve that sounds like a good deal. As I said I’m not technically minded. If I put on of those sims in my phone would I have a different number? Would I have to reload email and WhatsApp?

Hi from a fellow Ludite.
I got my first smartphone last year and wanted a simple cheap contract that allowed me access abroad. I went with Lebera. who use Vodaphone. I pay £5 a month for unlimited texts and calls along with 5Gb of internet. I can use this in the UK and abroad.
For extra internet on my tablet and for if the phone allowance runs out I bought a 4G router to put in the caravan. https://www.johnlewis.com/tp-link-m7350-...router/p3129652 I then bought a Smarty data only sim card for £10 and this gave me a months worth of internet up to 12GB. The month started when I activated the card and it lasted the 4 weeks we were away. https://smarty.co.uk/all-plans#data-only

I have a 24 month contract on EE and one of the two "extras" I could choose from when I took it out was "free" roaming in Europe. I also added this to my wife's Vodafone contract when I renewed her contract last year. So, it's worth checking to see if you can amend your contract?

We've got Tesco phones. They cost about £18 together a month and you get free data roaming in Europe until next year. If you run out of data you can buy more quite cheaply.

Depending on how new your phone is, you may have an eSIM facility. With this, you sign up with a supplier and download the software onto your phone. You can then switch between your UK network and a European network easily and avoid the roaming charges.

Revolut, Airalo, and Vodafone Travel eSIM are a few that you can access. Of course, the eSIM phone number will be different from your UK number.

Don’t think I have an E Sim facility. How would I know? It’s an IPhone 13 mini inherited from my daughter.

The chaotic situation in Spain taught us one thing.

As we were phoning abroad to the UK and on return the UK was phoning us, we had no service problems.

However the whole phone system in Spain was down and there was no service at all including texts etc as we found out when the garage was trying to.messsge us and try to pinpoint our position.

We managed by using Google maps and a Road Atlas.

Ah, my iPhone 15 Plus has this facility, but an older phone may not. I don't know when this facility was introduced

Have a look in 'Settings - Mobile Service'. If your phone has an eSIM facility, there will be a listing 'Add eSIM'

Got fed up with EE hiking prices every year so switched to Smarty. Monthly contract with unlimited calls and texts, 6Gb data and roaming included - £6 a month.
