Setting off
Confession: We are completely new to caravanning, although used to run a catering trailer so some of the concepts are familiar.
I'm wondering about a few practicalities about travelling.
Firstly, I'm aware of the weight restrictions, but leaving those on one side for a moment, is there any problem setting off with a small amount of water in the onboard tank?
How about the toilet cassette? Do you empty it before travelling?
How useful are the front covers when travelling?
Are the various doors and cupboards secure, especially the fridge, or is there anything which needs securing?
Anything else we need to be aware of? (I know to check the roof is locked down!)
With the catering trailer we had a long checklist covering lights, windows, power supply out, brake off, steadies up etc etc. Most things put there after forgetting them once!
Thanks for all your advice so far!
Peter

Empty your water tank/s when towing, you do not want lots of water slopping about
I empty my toilet cassette and re-prime it with 75ml of chemical and 2L of water unless it has only had one or two nights.
Towing covers will keep your van clean, but I'm doubtful of how effective a 2mm thick piece of cloth is at stopping a stone thrown up at 55mph from dinging your Eriba.
I double check my lockers and have fitted a turn button to the top of the bathroom door, just in case.

Here's a link to a pre-flight checklist that I wrote some years ago to avoid cock-ups, which you may find useful: Checklist
The points I added met my requirements at the time so feel free to download and then modify it to suit your own particular circumstances. I keep my copy in a transparent folder in the door pocket for convenience,
Hope you find it useful.

+1 for a checklist. I did exactly what Aaron suggested and downloaded his and edited for my purposes. I think it the most valuable item and advice for a first timer. Checklists are a good thing, that’s why pilots use them (sorry to continually repeat that phrase!)

I, too, have adapted Mr Calder's checklist - now on v3. I laminate it and keep in a pocket by the entrance door. An absolutely invaluable "extra". I have tweaked mine now so it's in two sections: interior and exterior - and, roughly, in chronological order. Make your own - and don't leave home without it - it has saved me on a couple of occasions

Nah, mate.
Mrs Pete and I thumb our noses at your namby-pamby checklists.
We live our life on the ragged edge, pummelling headlong toward the far horizon in a frisson of adrenaline-fuelled carelessness.
We don't tick boxes. We've never laminated anything in our entire lives.
We jump in the car and go, pedal to the metal, leaning out of the windows a-whoopin' and a-hollerin' with the wind in our hair and flies in our teeth.
Sometimes we remember the caravan, sometimes we don't.
Sometimes we only realise we haven't got it when we're halfway there, wherever there is. That's what happens when you never look back.
Do we care?
Not a jot

Having said that, there is one thing we'll never do.
Set off without emptying the toilet cassette.
