Hi we are new to Eriba and towing we are buying an Eriba 320Gt but don’t have a vehicle to tow at the moment
Please can anyone assist me with this, we will be buying a used diesel car
Any advice would greatly appreciated
Thank

Hi Clive and Sue and welcome to Eribafolk
There'll be more people along with more up to date knowledge on used diesel engine cars but we started towing our Eriba some 15 years ago with a Ford Focus Estate (1.6 Tdi 90 bhp). It towed well but could have done with a few more horses.
The 320 is such a well behaved Eriba but I would suggest that if possible you get an estate car or a Pope Mobile such as a Citroen C3 Picasso that has bags of room at the back to carry all the extra junk "needed on voyage".

Welcome to the forum and your impending arrival. Do not get hung up about a diesel for your tow car. After 20 years of diesels I swapped to an Audi A3 petrol 1.5L in 2019. I tow a significantly heavier Eriba than your Famila as my van is typically 1350kg. It is a far better towing engine than the diesels I have had.
Unless you can do regular long runs to clear the diesels dpf then I would strongly advise against buying one.
You also need to remember that modern petrol engines are very economical. My Audi around Devon returns 48-52mpg. On a long fast motorway run it is well into the mid 50'smpg. On a 50/55mph motorway run I have achieved a true 74mpg. When towing I get 32-36mpg. These figures are similar to what you would achieve with a diesel.

Before you make any decisions take a look at these two links:-
Talk Torque

And note that some petrol engines couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding. Yes many now can but it depends on what you get.

And to add to Randa's valid point, look for about 150bhp and 250N/m torque and you will be fine. This will also give you enough to grow into a larger Eriba if you wanted to.

I tow my Familia 320 with a Dacia Duster 1.5 dci (diesel) it has more than enough power to tow comfortably, it has 115bhp with 260Nm of torque.

When I go on holiday I like to pop my top!

Our 2017 Volvo V40 has the D4 Euro 6 diesel engine (so ULEZ compliant) and tows our Troll beautifully. It has 190bhp and 400Nm torque. We get 80mpg solo on a motorway run, over 50mpg local mileage and averages 35 to 40mpg towing (depending on road types - much better on continuous dual carriageway)
