Batteries etc

I think my battery is kaput. So, assuming I need another one (I'm testing it at the moment) is there a recommended brand? Or any to steer clear of?
Is there a real difference between AGM and standard lead acid?
And finally, is it necessary to modify the CSV 409A charger if fitting a lithium?

Picture enclosed of my new low cost favourite device! Battery voltage readout, plus usb charging ports!

Thanks

Peter

Hi Peter

An AGM battery is sealed so is maintenance free and does not gas under normal conditions, so it is safe to use in the Eriba's habitation area.
Sealed lead acid batteries can also be fitted in the hab area but usually require a vent pipe fitting to exhaust gasses produced when charging.

If you have a motormover, or may fit one in the future, a dual purpose battery will offer the best of both worlds, ie high current deliver for the mover and deep discharge cycles for habitation use.

Varta AGM from Tayna Batteries.

The CSV409 requires an upgrade to support Lithium technology to modify the charging profiles as they are different to those of lead acid or AGM.

Thanks John
I’ve pulled out the current battery and it’s an AGM, but basically a car battery rather than leisure or dual purpose. I’ve put it on a conditioner and will put it back in and see how it goes. The CSV charger was set for gel batteries which may explain why it didn’t seem to be charging fully?
When I come to replace it I’m tempted by lithium, although put off slightly by having to modify the charger. Does the modification retain the ability to use AGM/Lead Acid?

I don't know if the lithium conversion retains AGM/SLA charging - I'm sure a call to Apuljack would confirm this.

Currently our Eriba is fitted with a 95 AH battery, are there any downsides to fitting a 120 AH battery. Same dimensions so it just slots in. Thanks.

The User Manual for the CSV409 shows the charger is suitable for batteries from 80Ah upwards, so you should be ok with 120Ah.

Further to the Lithium conversion to the CSV409, the modification doesn't retain the original charging profiles and would have to be converted back by Apuljack.

Today I fitted a new Sargent charger to replace a duff unit (on-site emergency callout).

The charger is a recent product and supports Flooded, Gel, AGM and Lithium batteries, so could be a contender for a retrofit.

Thanks John, that looks worth a look if our current charger gives any trouble.
