If anyone is interested in fitting fridge fans, here's a link to a 'How to do it' guide that I wrote way back in 2014.
My system features two fans, a thermostatic control unit and a 3-colour Led that indicates the status of the unit (off - no light; on continuously - red light; on thermostat but not running - green light and running under thermostatic control - yellow light).

Just a warning that the Velleman kit (as used on Aaron's fridge fan project page above) is no longer available. Velleman have an alternative (Whadda) pre-assembled board available through their website. Around £8.
I'm about to build my own twin fan system - I bought two unused, very low noise, 12v, 120mm computer fans (Acoustifan AFDP-12025s) and a piece of 2mm aluminium to cut out, bend at the base and then attach by pop rivets to the "baffle" inside the fridge vents (the air is much better directed on the more modern RM5330 fridges).
I have looked at many designs, including Aaron's and John England's, the official Dometic one (very expensive) and the Reich one that I had on my last Eriba (seemed to work well, but also quite expensive). The Dometic installation guide is very useful for the best place to attach your thermal switch on the back of the fridge.
This site is also useful, with some DIY building involved, if you so wish:

You may find my approach of use, SImon:
Fridge fan upgrade - another approach
That also used computer fans and a witty little circuit board to control it all...
hth..

I have always decided not to go with some form of auto switching. The cooling gain with fans fitted is a welcome improvement, but the temperature drop is not a rapid thing. If I see it is going to be hot I simply turn them on in the morning.

A valid approach, Colin.
I think the way mine behave is that as soon as the cycling coolant in the fridge reaches 40C, then the fans turn on (at minimum speed0. That is unrelated to any other temperature. As the temperature increases in the 'flue', the fan speed is raised in response. So it isn;t playing 'catch up' as it were, but should be keeping up with the cooling requirement as it develops..
Whether that is any better or worse than your approach (or the same!), I don;t know...

As for us if our tonic water is not cold enough for the gin I just get the fans out of the bag, bung them into the hole and switch them on.....

Two large external frame mounted 5.25 inch 12V fans wired for two speeds. The fans blow outwards sucking air into the lower vent and blowing out of the upper vent. Simple change over series / parallel switch. In addition a small blanking plate to cover the small open area of the upper vent to prevent air being drawn in through the upper vent.
I did try with internally housed fans but found in very hot Italy the fridge was better but still struggled to cope. With the externally mounted larger fans with 100% top vent coverage everything was far better. Also less internal noise when the fans are on full blast.

And a very quick hairdryer when sat at the outside-mounted table...
Although, might it not blow out our table-top citronella candles, let alone the candelabra when we are having a formal dinner?
