Sad news indeed. Although we bought our Troll from Cameron at Automotive leisure, we had our first 6 years servicing done at Tebay. We always got a gentle ribbing from Mike for buying from Poole instead of them but we became quite attached to them and the banter was always good.

Two years ago we stopped using them for servicing and started using a recommended local caravan servicer but this wasn't through any dissatisfaction with them but purely to do with the distance involved to drive up to Tebay

The last service we had was perhaps a marker of things to come as they seemed to be full of lots of vans of various makes, even having a few Airstreams left for sale, and Kath commented on how much money they must have had tied up in stock. As usual Mike was the consummate salesman gently suggesting that it might be a good time to upgrade our Troll, whilst we sat together in an Airstream!

Interestingly we were in Southport earlier this week to watch cricket at Aigburgh (Liverpool) and we inadvertently passed the Red Lion dealership who also sell Eribas, and from the road that seemed to be full of stock (and we weren't sure that it was open).

No Eribas bar us at the Southport site. It seemed to be full of all sorts of large motorhomes, a variety of campervans of all sizes and ages, and quite a few big caravans, with grandparents looking after grandchildren. Also strangely, apart from one Basecamp, no teardrop type of things

Not a good time to be a caravan dealer methinks..........

Not a happy time for the staff at Tebay as good jobs mustn't be easy to find in South Cumbria .

We live near to Tebay (Kendal) and when we were in the market for an Eriba we went to see them. They had a decent stock but all over 20,000 and most well over that. We weren't ready to buy at this point and when we were in a position to compare we did find them at the top end of pricing. Fair enough, and we'd have paid a bit more for a local dealer however they didn't have anything to fit our spec. i.e. double dinette with washroom.
It did seem as if they were stuck with a lot of new vans which were just not moving?
In the end we found just what we wanted at Mansfield Caravans and when we picked it up found that it had been originally suppled by Adventure Leisure!
We were going to use them for servicing and it's a real shame they've gone under. We can only hope that someone else takes over there.

If dealers are going to fail it will be about this time of year.

Like car dealers, caravan dealers usually work using a stocking plan financed by a finance house like Black Horse or similar.

Basically they finance the stock, new and used and charge interest on the finance used. This means the dealership doesn't have to have capital of their own tied up in what's on the forecourt. However the financing of new stock is done on a model year basis, so at the end of the model year (end of August) the dealer has to pay the finance house for whatever's been bought in during the previous 12 months plus interest. If the dealer hasn't sold through and got rid of the years new stock they'll find it hard to pay that bill and the finance house may decline to provide a stocking plan for next year.
