We have stopped at Mains Farm just north of Penrith on our way to Scotland several times now https://edenvalleycaravansite.co.uk - it's a fantastic site, friendly owners and really chilled out - the "Woodside" adults only field is really nice and quiet. Fetherstone Arms nearby does really good food too.

The Englethwaite Hall CMC site is one of our favourites. It's a beautiful setting, not far from the M6, without facilities but with some fully serviced pitches. The lack of facilities keeps the pitch price low compared to most CMC sites and the wardens are lovely people.
I had nothing to do on this hot afternoon

A couple of miles east of Carlisle:- https://www.greenacrescumbria.co.uk/
It has the best shower block we have come across ever with individual wet rooms about 10 x 10 ft. Hard standing level pitches set out with lots of open green space around. And the bonus is the very reasonable price.

If you have travelled up from the far South West the two Caravanning & Motorhome Club sites just south of Kendal might be far enough - Meathop Fell or Kendal itself are both within 10 minutes of the M6 Junction 36. They are both quite large sites and easy to get to. Both have somewhere to eat nearby if you can't be othered cooking. Meathop has a hotel virtually on the site and the food is OK if a bit limited in choice. Kendal has the excellent Strickland Arms just up the road where the food and beer are really good..
There is also a smallish Camping & Caravan Club site on the northern side of Kendal which is smallish but well-looked after however this takes longer to get to from the M6.
Enjoy Western Scotland but don't forget to bring some Smidge just in case the lovely midges are still about
