Has anyone had a Westfalia towbar with a vertically detachable towball fitted to a VW and is it a good choice?

Hi Linda - not entirely sure what you mean by 'vertically detachable towball' but do you mean like the attached image? This is like a big (and heavy) letter 'U' with the part that slots into the tow bar underneath the rear sill. Mine is like this on the VW Touran although whether or not it's Westfalia or not I couldn't really say. Good chance it is though as it's VW's own and I had the entire rig - tow bar, ball and electrics fitted by my local dealer. It's simplicity itself to fit although you do need to get down on your knees and it's quite a heavy lump of metal.

As to whether or not it's a good choice - well that's a difficult one to answer requiring a horses for courses type answer. I went with the dealer option because they made a right hash of a collision repair and as I was in the market for a tow bar etc the dealer offered me the entire rig free by way of compensation. That said, even if I'd had to pay for it myself I'd still probably have gone for the dealer option.

I had the original specification Westfalia removable towbar fitted to our Audi A4 Convertible together with the dedicated electrics that automatically detects a trailer and modifies the stability programs in the car's management computer.

It was expensive at about £700 but it's definitely the dog's nadgers. One tip, don't go to a VW agent for fitting as they will more than likely contract it out to a specialist and then charge you VW rates. Cut out the middle man and go direct to your local towbar fitter.

Here are a couple of pics with towbar fitted and removed. The 13-pin electrical socket swivels completely out of sight when not in use and the towball stows in the boot.

Highly recommended!

Thank you both so much for your help and especially for taking the photographs. We were quoted a little bit more than £700 from the approved fitter so we have gone ahead and ordered it.

I use towing mirrors, but don't really need them, as the view from my Octavia is adequate past my 320 Familia. It's all done to save the £50 per mirror fine if I don't have them.
