Help with understanding electrics

Hi all. I've got a couple of questions about our Triton 430 jubile. Think it's a 1999 model. I'd really appreciate someone explaining the electrical system to me or pointing me in the right direction to an article on the forum.
1.The battery was flat when we got the van last week so I took it out and charged it. IMG_20200803_164307359_copy_600x800.jpg - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)The lights work now. I'm wondering - is there a master switch which turns everything off or switches between mains, car and battery? My old uneriba van had such a switch!
There's a brown switch by the door IMG_20200803_164225369_copy_600x800.jpg - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)which doesn't seem to do anything! Does anyone know what this is?
2. Is there a way/what's the best way to tell how much charge remains in the battery?
3. What do I need to know about the charger and the transformer? Any information about these much appreciated.

Apologies if this all seems obvious!

Best, Stan

The switch by the door is probably for the outside awning light. When hooked up to mains you should be able to turn the light on.
Only way to check if battery is OK is via a multimeter or adding a permanent display. It should read and hold 12.7v when fully charged and not connected to the mains.

This article from way back may be of interest: BIP Unit and this one too: Charging problems

The brown switch is definitely for the awning light. I may be getting this wrong (?) but I think it is designed only to work when the van is connected to the mains via the EHU to ensure that you are unable to tow with a white light showing to the front. There is a relay in the BIP unit that operates when it detects mains voltage making the switch operable (again, I think). I'm sure the vultures will swoop in and correct me if I'm wrong.

If the van is fitted with a 12v socket then it is a simple matter to plug in a digital voltage display for monitoring purposes.

As Mr Motters says, the brown switch IS the awning light.
The other thing I and many others have found, is unlike UK electrics, the interior lighting system has BLUE for LIVE and BROWN for NEUTRAL

Great information. Many thanks for all the quick replies. That clears up the mystery of the brown switch. I think there's a 12v socket on the battery locker so getting plug in meter is a good idea. Checked the voltage today and it was 8.1v soni suspect the battery is on its last legs. Don't reckon this will be too much of a problem as will mainly go for sites with hook up.
Wow! That's interesting about the blue/brown wire situation for the 12v lights!

Stan,

here's a 12v display with a couple of USB sockets also: (needs cigarette lighter socket)

Just be aware that most of the systems such as lighting and pumps still work via the leisure battery ans all that EHU is doing is keeping your battery charged to run these. If your battery is showing signs of giving up it might be wise to change it.

If VW campervans are anything to go by, all earth wires on the 12V side are brown. Makes sense to keep it the same way for caravans.

Ta for all advice above. Well I managed to get to the van again today and got to plug it into the mains for the first time since buying it.

I was pleased to see that indeed the brown switch is for the awning light and it also appears a mains light in the bathroom.

I am not sure about the age or condition of the battery. I put it on a ctech charger a week ago and then put it back in the van, van not plugged in to mains. I checked the voltage across the terminals and it was only about 8V. I figure that it should have kept its charge.

This afternoon when I connected the van to the mains I checked the the voltage and it was higher, can't remember exact number, so am I right in assuming the battery charger is working? After disconnecting the mains for a few minutes, it had dropped to 11.99. IMG_20200812_132834491_copy_500x666.jpg - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)

I'm going to order a new battery as I've read that it should maintain 13.8v.

Best, Stan

On my Puck the 12 volts work without the battery attached. The original BIP unit has got a transformer and rectifier built in. The Battery only feeds the lights and pump when off hook up. The awning light is a special case but is still 12Vdc

I thought a fully charged battery should show 12.7 - 12.8 volts, so sounds like you do need a replacement.
