Can anyone identify this please?

When we arrived on site at Cheddar last Wednesday and got levelled up, I saw something almost identical to this near my tow hitch but didn't give it another thought as it's not uncommon to find bits of other people's caravans and awnings when pitching.

Problem is that when we got home and I uncoupled the van, I found the other half under the hitch. Does anyone recognise it, are replacements available and if so what sort of a job is it to replace?

Does it surround one of the friction pads inside the coupling, or is it one of the washers on the end of the corner steadies threaded bar.

Something to do with the coupling sounds likely, Colin. It appears to be made of some sort of fibre and the discolouration seems possibly to be mould. It was directly under the towball when I unhitched the van.

Which stabilizer do you have Brian? Here's a parts list for the various models but I can't see anything that resembles it.

What about AKS 1300 part 4 seal See diagram in above link. It features in a number of places. Werbung: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321894227588

Could it be some sort of putty/ mastic?

I think you've cracked it, Roger, and I now need a seal kit.

I'll add it to the 'to do' list.

Thanks to all for your kind assistance and suggestions.

Hi Brian, as you need the Seal Kit it might be a good idea to replace the bearings aswell - they're quite fragile and the rollers tend to
fall out of the carrier.

Both parts are available from Taunton Trailers.

What ho, John!

It makes sense to do the bearings at the same time. Thanks for the tip.

There are 2 sets of bearings and shims (item 7) but they're only supplied in singles.

The seal kit is item 4.

Perhaps it might be prudent to have a look to see what actually needs replacing as it could
work out quite dear, dear

A nice, clear diagram John . Presumably 1 qty seal kit does the whole job and 2qty bearing kits?

When I was looking up ALKO AKS 1300 stabilisers I notice that they have been discontinued so no way of buying a new one.

I've ordered the seal kit and confirmed that the one that has failed is the largest shown in the diagram 65mm in diameter.

I think I'll repaint the lever and ratchet wheel while they are off too.

I have just completed the overhaul of my ALKO 1300 stabiliser which is now back on the caravan.

Thanks to Roger for correctly identifying the disintegrated seal and to JohnE for his advice regarding the retaining dowel that I used when removing the unit from the drawbar.

I've written up a detailed guide to doing the job in the 'How to .....' section. Link: Alko 1300
