Rear window replacement

Discovered whilst away that the rear window of our 2005 Triton had largely delaminated. When I investigated this on our return the inner panel cracked in half (yes, I know, DIY incompetence) I have now glued it and taped it round the edges with T-Rex tape so we can still use it (away again in two weeks time), however my wife is not liking the clear tape stripe down the middle (Nor am I, to be honest), so a new/replacement window is needed.

So, anyone know of any rear windows for sale? In the absence of Jandi I have searched the Forum archive and found lots about front windows and suppliers, so I have now emailed my needs to Caravan Crazy, The Caravan Centre and Willemsen in Holland.

Any other good places to look? Nothing on Ebay at the mo...

Thanks in anticipation,
Simon

Up until recently, I would have proposed you look at the Caravan Breakers in Blaenafon but as aaron Calder sadly pointed out a few weeks ago, they had a massive fire on the premises so are no longer in business.

There should be other Caravan Breakers in the UK somewhere and if thier website and staff are as on the ball as the Blaenafon crew, you could possibly get something that matches from them.

https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1CHB...rlfi=hd:;si:;mv:[[54.916092299999995,0.6689836],[50.5655435,-4.325588]];tbs:lrf:!1m4!1u3!2m2!3m1!1e1!1m4!1u2!2m2!2m1!1e1!2m1!1e2!2m1!1e3!2m4!1e17!4m2!17m1!1e2!3sIAE,lf:1,lf_ui:10

Many caravan manufacturers use the same or very simiar sizes and fits.

Typically, there seem to be a number of front windows available at the moment, but no rear ones. Lots of rear impact accidents, perhaps? Or little demand for rear windows... Hey ho, I have glued and screwed it and it's the inner pane that's cracked, so still usable.

Have now had two quotes from UK suppliers - £582 from Caravan Crazy (will be a secondhand European import) and Koolclassics came back with a new one for £750.The price is slowly coming down - phew! One direct European source to go (hope it may mean just one set of price mark up...)

A quick update. the best price I received was the one from Caravan Crazy - a brand new window imported from Europe - so that's the one I went for and it has just arrived. It's in excellent condition and very well packaged for protection. Can't thank Chris (at Caravan Crazy) enough for his patience and great communication.

All I have to do now is fit it... will wait for warmer weather, I think, or try and find a heated workshop to do the work in. Updates with photos to be posted when I do the job.

a quick addendum: Because it's a new window it's original grey, not sun-affected bronze... As it's on the back on its own, that doesn't matter, however be aware (anyone else doing this) that the colour may not match the windows already on your van.

That's interesting Simon as there's been plenty of discussion regarding Eriba windows only ever being produced in Grey yet over the years some have turned bronze.
Presumably the window you purchased is not Eriba specific?

Yes, I think it is - the size is so specific that I think it must be made solely for Eriba (up to 2010). The original one (that broke) was made by Polyplastic in Holland and I will have a look at the new one when I get it out to see who made it - all I did was check the measurements and the catch positions when it arrived. The three catches across the bottom seems to be fairly unusual - and the trapezoidal shape is too...

I read on here somewhere that the bronze effect was thought to have been caused by a chemical reaction in the surface treatment of the Polyplastic windows. It will be interesting to see if the new window discolours in use...

Looking back at some pdfs of original 2005 sales brochures, the windows were originally grey - all the photos show grey windows - not a bronze/pink one in sight.

Brian (Aaron Calder) had the problem with one of his front windows a few years ago. He managed to get a replacement from Blaenafon Caravan Breakers which was grey but his other window was bronze.

Jean from Jandi confirmed that Hymer Eriba only installed grey and she'd had the problem previously when she'd ordered new windows from Hymer which were grey upon arrival much to the displeasure of one of her customers.

Oh Bugger! (3)

Very strange for our Eriba is now 23 years old and we've had it for 13 years. It is open to the full weather when at home and not under cover and yes, it does get hot in our part of Wales, but we take it abroad for three months every year to really sunny climates like Portugal or Greece yet the windows have not changed colour. They were grey and still are.

It seems as if it's only the Polyplast windows that go bronze. Other suppliers were used and they may well have used different coatings or plastic grades for the windows? Ours is stamped with the name Polyplastic and the material Roxite PMMA (07). Other makes were used at different times (and on different models at the same time) I believe.

Caravan Crazy say they are the only UK partner with Polyplast(ic), so I'm guessing my new window will have been made by them.

Hi Simon.

So in a nutshell are you saying that Caravan Crazy ONLY deal with Polyplastic Windows and therefore there is a likelihood of those windows turning bronze or can they seek out non polyplastic windows if required (maybe remaining grey perminantly) ?

This is an interesting comment from them:-
"Colour/Tint:
Available in clear and various tints. Grey tint is the most popular. Bronze tint is fitted to many models built up to 2005 but has been withdrawn as it was found not to be UV stable and this resulted in the bronze tint faded with prolonged exposure to sunlight."

Is there some confusion here? Mr Calder's new window had differing colour on the window bar and the plastic surround.

Caravancrazy comment refers to the various tints of the window, presumably the glazing itself.
